Features and settings in Indows 2000 and IIS 5.0
If you are currently performing an appropriately tuned site on Windows NT Server 4.0 containing IIS 4.0, the site should be executed smoothly on Windows Server and IIS 5.0. For information, see Windows Performance Test by ZD Labs.
When migrating, you still have to monitor your servers and sites. You will notice that there are some new features designed for enhanced performance and simplified management in Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0. In addition, the default setting value in IIS 4.0 has changed since IIS 5.0. These features and changes are discussed in this section.
To set Windows 2000 as an application server
Setting the server computer as an application server is the quickest way to improve performance if you plan to use the server primarily as a Web server. This allows you to take advantage of higher SMP scalability, higher network performance, and more support for the physical memory of WEB applications. For applications that perform COM, using Windows 2000 as an application server can also have additional benefits for COM +. In addition, you can use COM + 's transaction processing functionality as a transaction monitor to improve the performance of your database applications. Windows server will be installed by default as a file server, so you must determine that the application server was selected during the installation process. However, even if it is not selected, it is easy to set up the server as an application server after installation. To select ┱
1. Click [Start], point to Settings, and then press [Network and dial-up connections].
2. Select [Zone Connection] and turn on its properties.
3. Select [File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks] and turn on its properties.
4. On the Server Optimization tab, select [Maximum amount of data transfer for network applications].
This setting will not take effect until the server is restarted.
IISReset Utility
IIS 5.0 provides new features and default settings that make the site that performs IIS 5.0 more reliable and manageable. The first of these features is the new IISReset.exe, a utility that lets you stop and restart the IIS service without having to reboot. IISReset will restart your service by default when they fail. You can also use IISReset to start, stop, or pause your service remotely, or restart your server computer as needed. You should reboot when there is no way. If you use IISReset to restart your network service, users will encounter a short pause, and they can just click the rearrange to get the new page. If you restart the entire computer, you will not be able to use it longer. You can also isolate the service you want to stop. For example, if you are executing an SMTP server on the same computer as the WEB server, you can choose to stop and restart your Web service, not even the SMTP service.
