A. Win 2K disk quota
Computers running Windows 2K can allocate the disk space that users use on demand. As long as you are on a drive in the NTFS 5.0 file system format, you can limit the use of disk space to users by enabling the disk quota management feature. Disk quotas are a user-and partition-based file storage management. With disk quota management, administrators can reasonably allocate disk space that can be used by local users or remote users who log on to the local computer, and each user can only use the disk space that is allocated by the administrator. Disk quotas are transparent to each user, and when a user queries the available disk space, the system only reports the space allowed by the quota to the user, and the system prompts for full disk space when the quota limit is exceeded. Disk quotas calculate user disk space usage based on the amount of disk space occupied by all files owned by the user, regardless of where the file resides. The ownership of the file is identified by the security identifier in the file's security information, and if the user takes ownership of a file in the drive, the disk space he has used will be added to the space of the file.
Two. disk quota enabled
1. Log on to the win 2K system as a member of the system administrator or Administrator group, right-click on the drive in the NTFS 5.0 file system format, and select the properties item, where we can see a new option page "quota" In the Drive Properties dialog box. Select the Quota Options page and select the check box before enable quota management, as shown in Figure 1.
2. When you enable disk quotas, you can set two values: the disk quota limit and the disk quota warning level. Disk quota limits Specify the amount of disk space that users are allowed to use. The warning level specifies a value that is close to the user's quota limit. For example, you can set the user's disk quota limit to 30MB and set the disk quota warning level to 25MB. In this case, the user can store no more than 30MB of files on the drive. If the user stores more than 25MB of files on the drive, the disk quota system is logged as a system event.
When you enable disk quotas on a drive that already contains files, the Win 2K calculates the amount of disk space that is used by all users who copy, save, or take ownership of files on the drive until that point in time. The quota limit and the quota warning level are then applied to all current users based on the results of the calculations, as well as to users who start using the drive from that point in time. You can then set different quotas or disable disk quotas for one or more users, as needed. You can also set quotas for users who have not yet copied files, saved files, and acquired ownership of files on the drive.
3. If you select the "Deny disk space to users exceeding the quota limit" option, when the amount of disk space that the user has used reaches the quota limit, the user receives a "low disk space" error message and cannot write any data on the drive without first deleting or moving some of the existing files to free up space. If you do not want to deny users access to the drive but want to track the use of disk space by each user, it is useful to enable disk quotas and not limit the use of disk space.
4. Select the "Log events when users exceed quota limit" option and the "Log events when users exceed warning level" option, so that the event is written to the Windows system log on that computer, regardless of when the user exceeds the quota warning level or quota limit. The administrator can view these events by filtering the disk event types by using Event Viewer.
Three. Management of disk quota projects
When disk quota management is enabled, all users use the default quota limit and the quota warning level set when disk quota is started. Using quota project management, you can set up appropriate disk quotas for each user, maintain disk quota settings for users, and record the use of disk space by each user.
Access to disk quota project management methods are as follows: Right-click on a drive in the NTFS 5.0 file system format, select the properties item, go to the Drive Properties dialog box, select the Quota Options page, click the Quota Entries button, and go to the Quota Entries window, as shown in Figure 2.
Four. Add new Quota Entries
Before a user writes data to a drive, you can use the new Quota Entries feature to set quota limits and warning levels for specific users. The method is as follows:
In the Quota Entries window, select the new quota entry item in the Quota menu to eject the Select User dialog box;
If you are a user in a domain, select the appropriate domain name in the look in area, or select the name of the local computer if it is a user on the local computer. In the list of users, select the user you want to add, and click the "Add" button, clicking OK, as shown in Figure 3.
In the Add New Quota Entry dialog box, set the disk quota options for the selected user, depending on the actual needs. As shown in Figure 4.
When the settings are complete and confirmed, you can return to the Quota Entries window to see the newly added quota entries in the list.
