You can use section breaks to change the layout or formatting of one or more pages in a document. For example, you can set the layout of one section of a one-column page to two columns. You can divide the chapters in your document so that the pages of each chapter start at 1, and you can create different headers or footers for the sections of your document.
Note: In Microsoft Office Word 2007, you can select multiple page layouts from the new page design style gallery. For example, click the page Layout option in the new page Design Gallery to add a single column page that contains a two-column section.

Section breaks are used to control the section formatting of the text that precedes it. If you delete a section break, you also delete the formatting of the text in the section. The text becomes part of the next section and is formatted with the following section. For example, if you use a section break to divide a document's chapters and then delete the section breaks at the beginning of Chapter 2nd, then Chapter 1th and 2nd will be in the same section and only in the format originally used in the 2nd chapter.
The section break that controls the last part of the document is not displayed as part of the document. To change the document format, click in the last paragraph in the document.
The following example shows the type of section break that can be inserted (in each illustration, a double dotted line represents a section break).
The next Page command inserts a section break and starts the new section on the next page. This type of section break is especially useful for starting a new chapter in a document.

Insert Section Break
The continuous command inserts a section break, and the new section starts on the same page. Continuous section breaks are useful for changing formatting on a page, such as a different number of columns.
Figure 3
The odd page or even Page command inserts a section break, and the new section starts with the next odd-numbered page or even page. If you want the document chapters to always start with odd or even pages, use the odd-numbered page or even page section break option.

Delete changes to the layout of a document
A section break defines where a document's formatting changes occur. If you delete a section break, you also delete the formatting of the text in the section. The text becomes part of the next section and is formatted with the following section.
