If the word "open source" is mentioned to those it people who are interested in cloud computing, their ears may soon be erected. Open source software provides a solution that solves the problem of vendor lock-in that is the concern of many enterprises dedicated to the cloud platform. Cloud platforms such as OpenStack promote a "coopitition" relationship between competitors in the popular cloud computing market, offering an option for enterprises to build interoperable open source clouds. But when looking for open source PAAs, how do companies choose?

Searchcloudcomputing with the chief executive of the French OW2, Cédric Thomas, OW2 is an independent community focused on the creation of the Open-source code base for cloud computing. Similar to the Apache and OpenStack Foundation, OW2 focuses on infrastructure software and tools for developing, deploying, and managing applications, with close to 100 projects, 60 community members, and 22,000 developers.

What is the difference between Techtarget:ow2 and Apache, OpenStack, and other open source cloud platforms?

Cédric Thomas: We are created in Europe, our members are mainly enterprises, institutions and universities, not individuals, this is a different place from Apache. In other ways, we are no different in technology.

We had a recent meeting with OpenStack and knew that there was no competition between OW2 and OpenStack, because what OW2 did was actually a layer above openstack. OpenStack focuses on the computing, networking, and storage capabilities of the infrastructure, the service (IaaS) layer. The goal of OW2 is the platform, the Service (PaaS) platform layer, or the application platform for the cloud. All of our cloud projects now use OpenStack as a reference to the development platform.

We do this on our own infrastructure, as we are our member hosting services. We have implemented a OpenStack cloud platform so that our project and test development can be run on OpenStack. You can view OW2 as an organization that can bring value to openstack ecosystems. Nor do we want to compete with them because there is no reason to compete in the open source world. We want to reuse or expand in this area, rather than let our open source partners cover our results.

Techtarget:openstack mentioned the concept of "cooperative competition", which is to bring competitors together to accelerate the development of cloud computing projects. What are the challenges of this cooperative approach to competition?

Cédric Thomas: Until 2010, open Source was competing with proprietary software. Each category has been developed, invested, marketed, sold, supported or maintained by private companies, and eventually sold in the open source field. This is also the way open source software replicates proprietary software. You can start with gun, and by contrasting with what already exists, you will find that gun is not unique and has been defined.

Some changes have taken place in 2010. We realised that cloud computing was not a fad for the market, so we decided to position OW2 in cloud computing. We realize that open source and cloud computing are racing, not just like proprietary software. Open source innovation drives cloud computing innovation. Therefore, open source is the best way of cloud technology collaboration innovation. Through open source, the underlying relationship can be defined with open source licenses, allowing open source to collaborate, collaborate, and innovate in a very easy way, even if there is a competitive relationship between vendors.

We support a small number of cloud projects, and our vendors are potential competitors, and the entire open source campaign delivers technology rather than products. This is important. I think open source will help companies to achieve a level of technology or technical status, then they can define the product. The real challenge is that open source will deliver incomplete products or complete 80% or 90% of the product, then the vendor will be refined from the commercial level. This is also what many of our projects do, and OpenStack will change that.

TechTarget: In PAAs, does OW2 compete with private solutions?

Cédric Thomas: All technologies are well defined from the infrastructure, the service (IaaS) level. All the problems are product and promotion to industrial grade products. This is useful for enterprise deployment workloads to cloud computing platforms.

Now what is the most critical and real challenge is to develop cloud-oriented information systems for businesses and specific services. These cloud-oriented information systems can take advantage of social applications, data, resources, and services, some within the enterprise and some outside the enterprise. Therefore, cloud-oriented information systems will eventually mix. This is what PAAs does: helping businesses and CIOs develop next-generation information systems. We often call this PAAs, which is where innovation takes place. We have developed middleware that uses different enterprise technologies to provide resources.

TechTarget: Some people criticize that OpenStack is not ready for a complete product, or that critical upgrades are a bit slower than community expectations. Is that part of the problem with competing vendors?

Cédric Thomas: You're a little pessimistic. 2010, nothing. There are three of them; there are no fewer than 3,000 meetings held by OpenStack. There is nothing faster than this. This brings a lot of feedback as well as a lot of time. This is also a change in open source collaboration projects; manufacturers are contributing, but from a point of view they have their own interests. That's what industry is all about.

TechTarget: Do you think there will be a huge change in open source in two years?

Cédric Thomas: There will be more openstack assignments. The IaaS will gradually become commercialized. Use a community-ready platform. I think the hosting industry will be integrated; there will be fewer big custodians leading the market. In North America, Rackspace, Amazon Web Services and Google, each country will develop its own national custodian to handle data compliance issues. In each country, a small number of custodians are controlled by large telecommunications companies.

These picks will provide services and applications as well as value-added services. Opencloudware, for example, developed a technology for cloud management lifecycle applications. We don't talk about infrastructure. Solve the application needs, focus on the information stack up. It is the application and the tools you use to manage them.

A new generation of applications will have the principle of cloud-oriented. It is not an application that utilizes a database or process process; These new applications are service oriented and the bucket is provided by a Third-party computing Web service. Everything will be standardized. These applications can also be deployed across servers and mobile devices. The server needs to handle mobile devices. This is a new architecture and methodology faced by software engineers.
