Programmers who have long been involved in programming activities expect to be able to climb to a high enough position at the age of more than 50 or retire smoothly.

But what I'm talking about here may be a question you haven't thought about: What if you lose your job by then?

Your career will be a problem when you are more than 50 years old. If you have good technology, someone hires you, you will have a high title, or you are an expert, or have a good interpersonal relationship, you are likely to find a new position.

Otherwise, you will be reduced to homelessness from food and clothing. It's true. I am 55 years old, my resume will make you feel very good, 10 years ago I can earn up to 1 million dollars. Now I'm a tramp. I'm not very good, no medical insurance, no dentist. The job I can find is just some manual labor that basically doesn't require skill, and I can't do it.

I'm trying to be a tutor. However, this money is basically not enough to pay gas charges. An executive assistant Company's boss turned me down as long as they had experience.

There were two of people who thought I'd take care of their older relatives, but I didn't. When I go there I will have a duty to wait on the poop to pee.

I don't want you to become me. What I can give you is my advice:

1. Climb up in the workplace, don't stop.

2. Becoming an expert on the one hand-although it is important to maintain a wide technical side, you will not be eliminated.

3. Establish a interpersonal circle. Enlarge it.

4. Diversify your investment.

5. When there is work, health insurance must be on, this aspect does not have the problem. If you don't have a job, no money, and no health insurance, it's going to be a serious problem.

6. Be a kindness. But don't be stupid. Most of the people you've helped won't repay you.

About becoming an expert on one side, I did a job in 2011, and I'm sure the market doesn't like generalist/generalist technicians.

Technically I've been an all-around athlete for 35 years. The job requires me to do so. Most of any project as soon as it comes I do, including any type of programming development. When the dotcom bubble came up, the company spent all its money and I took on all the technical roles; IT, web, development, technical support, documentation, etc. I'll do all the work.

Later, these experiences did not bring me any change. There are few job postings that say "need a little bit of everything".

When the dotcom bubble burst in 2003, I had a 1 million dollar stake. After most of the loss, I had to go back to the job market. This only realizes that the recruiting unit does not have much demand for the older technical generalists.

In my personal situation, some things are different from you, this is another story, next time. But if you're a technical generalist and you're unemployed in middle age, you're likely to experience this:

"With such experience, you should be a CTO," he said. Why don't you have a job?

They're going to ask you about algorithmic issues--you've had 30 years of not thinking about them. Or ask you to encode an exam--in this unfavorable situation you do not have the expertise.

Plan early. There are ten of them in life.
