Oracle elastic cloud and data warehouse provide obvious advantages. First, a single vendor provides all the basic components: Oracle's one-stop approach helps simplify licensing, support, upgrade, and integration, all these transactions are handled by a single vendor. This may help prevent vendors from repeatedly pushing each other on technical issues. Configuration, upgrade, and integration use a single vendor approach makes it easier to simplify the contact and verification paths for these issues into a single portal for easy deployment.
Other advantages include optimized performance, improved fault tolerance, and rapid deployment. However, these advantages can also be converted into disadvantages. For example, a single vendor solution usually means that you are locked on the vendor platform, so it is difficult to migrate to another vendor. In terms of Exadata, it may not be so serious because the Organization may already have a commitment to run the Oracle database. On the other hand, Oracle databases installed on the Exadata system can be transferred to other hardware at any time. If needed, this reduces the single-vendor locking problem.
With the release of Exalogic, the single-vendor model tends to be more serious, just because Oracle Exalogic locks various Oracle technologies, from Funsion Middleware to JRockit and HotSpot. In this case, there is no direct competitor.
Other disadvantages include price (hardware and software license), high cost of support contracts, and regular upgrades. In a diversified solution, IT managers have more control over pricing, scale, and other problems, but they will be forced to "self-integrate" multi-vendor solutions.
Due to the processing scale, it is difficult to distinguish the differences between competing solutions, especially those customized and non-customized components. However, some features of Exalogic and Exadata can be created using common rack-mounted blade systems, high-performance storage area networks, and other vendors provide applications. Databases can be selected from commercial databases or open-source databases, and OLTP capabilities can be provided by software vendors.
