We've heard a lot about the desktop version of Windows 7, and the most recent news is that Microsoft says it will no longer release the beta version of Windows 7, and the next upgrade will be the RC version closest to the final release, which means the final version is getting closer. However, according to Microsoft's enterprise-Class operating system roadmap, the Windows 7 server release may be late and will not be released until 2010.

Microsoft enterprise-Class operating system roadmap

The most recent enterprise-class operating system from the roadmap, that is, the server version of Windows 7, is not named after its development code "Windows 7 Server", but is named "Windows Server 2008 R2", which means that Windows The 7 server version does not look like a major product upgrade from win to win 2003, but only an update of the existing Windows Server 2008, which can be understood as the enhanced version of Win 2008.

At the end of October 08, at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC2008), Microsoft first demonstrated the Pre-Beta version of Windows Server 2008 R2, but the version was not perfect and did not offer a download trial. Until January 10, 09, Microsoft released a beta version of Windows Server 2008 R2 on its website, offering users a 30-day free download trial. Beta version includes Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, data Center Edition, web version, itanium® version five, the test edition only provides the English language.

Although the Windows Server 2008 R2 is not intrinsically different from win 2008, the basic features are of course the same, but the R2 version incorporates some very attractive features:

X64 platform: Windows Server 2008 offers 32-bit and 64-bit versions, but will completely discard 32-bit, only 64-bit versions in R2. The 32-bit processor in the server area is already sunset and will be replaced by a 64-bit processor in less than a few years, so the win 2008 R2 will be built entirely on the X64 platform and Microsoft's first operating system with a 64-bit version.

Supports 256 logical processors: At the Microsoft Hardware Conference in 08 (WinHEC), Microsoft said that win 7 could support 256 logical processors when introducing Windows 7 features, as well as Windows Server 7, which uses the same architecture as Windows 2008 The R2 can support up to 256 logical processors. Of course, support for multiple logical processors is more meaningful on the server side. The so-called logical processor refers to the number of physical processors multiplied by the number of cores and the number of threads. In other words, Windows Server 2008 R2 can support 64 physical processors * 2 Cores * 2 threads = 256 logical processors. Windows Server 2008 supports up to 64 logical processors.

Support for real-time migration (live migration) Hyper-V 2.0: In Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft's Server Virtualization tool Hyper-V has been enhanced to add live migration (real-time migration) technology, The real-time migration between the physical host and the virtual machine can be achieved in milliseconds without disruption of service or user links. Data centers are also truly virtualized, largely disconnected from the management of software and hardware, and all operations are done within a single operating system framework. The Hyper-V 2.0 virtual machines are enhanced with logical processor and memory support, and current Hyper-V can support 24 logical processors, while each virtual machine in Hyper-V 2.0 can support 32 logical processors and up to 64GB of memory.

Power Management Enhancements: The Windows Server 2008 R2 contains a "Core Parking" feature that evaluates the processing effort of multi-core servers and can terminate the delivery of new work to these cores in some cases. Then, when the kernel is idle, it allows the server to sleep, reducing the overall power consumption of the server.

PowerShell 2.0:powershell, an object-based Shell, powershell 2.0, officially released by Microsoft in the fourth quarter of 2006, has also been published in beta and user technology previews, which will be used in Windows Server 2008 R2 was fully integrated into the software when it was officially released. Win 2008 R2 includes a new set of server management interfaces, all based on PowerShell 2.0. It added 240 cmdlets command sets, and the new PowerShell graphical user interface adds development capabilities, making it easier for users to create their own command lines. Also, PowerShell will be able to install to the Windows Server kernel.

IIS version 7.0 in IIS 7.0:windows Server 2008 R2 is more powerful with the support of the latest PowerShell 2.0, including updates to failover clusters and some of the most recently popular IIS extensions ( such as WebDAV and administration packs), and it also supports more development technologies such as Silverlight and PHP.

Direct Access DA: The direct Access feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 allows users to access files, data, or use applications from a corporate network in any network location, without having to pass a traditional manual connection to the VPN. Direct access reduces the operational complexity of end users and ensures the security of remote access.

DHCP failover: This is a new feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 that migrates to a new system when DHCP fails. DHCP failover allows administrators to plan and deploy a highly resilient DHCP environment through Windows DHCP servers. This feature can also be used as a platform for building Windows IP management solutions, providing administrators with a comprehensive experience in managing their DHCP schemas.

From the major new features above, we can see that Windows Server 2008 R2 provides more powerful enterprise application support for enterprise users. But at the moment we are able to get a beta version, according to the Microsoft Roadmap, from the 2010 version of the launch of a period of time, there may be some changes in the official version, but also may add new features. Although Windows Server 2008 R2 is not a major product upgrade from Win 2000 to win 2003, this latest enterprise platform is well worth looking forward to.
