Comparison between IBM project management methods and PMBOK

IBM's project management method has also gone through a development process. In the process of service transformation, IBM first integrates various internal project management methods of IBM, for example, the methodology of application development projects, the implementation methodology of ERP software packages, and the methodology of integrated product R & D projects launched the WSDDM methodology in the middle of 1990s. This methodology is actually a collection of management methods for different types of projects, project management and technical methods are integrated. Therefore, this methodology covers more than a dozen project management methods. At the end of 1990s, a Project Management Committee (PM/COE, project management best practices Center) was established at IBM to integrate the project management methods of IBM, A unified project management method is formed within IBM, called WWPMM.

 

 

The IBM project management method WWPMM consists of four components: PM Domain, Working Product, and Working Pattern ), project Management System (PM System ). The project management field (PM Domain) can be understood as the knowledge field of project management, which is similar to the nine knowledge fields in PMBOK. However, PMBOK is expanded in depth and breadth, in line with IBM's project management industry characteristics and company management philosophy.

 

The project management method of IBM defines 13 fields, which are divided into 51 Sub-domains and then 150 processes ). PMBOK has nine knowledge domains and is divided into 44 processes. The processes in the IBM project management method are at the same level as those in the PMBOK. 13 of IBM's project management methods are as follows:

11. Supplier Management supplier management (corresponding to PMBOK Procurement Management)

IBM's project management field is compared with PMBOK's 9 knowledge in three aspects: 1. the PMBOK content is basically used in quality management, procurement management, human resource management, and risk management, which is consistent. 2. the IBM project management method extends the sponsor protocol management, event management, and technical environment management to meet the needs of IBM for project management. 3. reorganize the integration management, range management, time management, cost management, and Communication Management in PMBOK, project Definition, work plan management, change management, delivery management, communication management, tracking and control, in line with the project process, and project work and management control work are differentiated.

 

PMBOK does not have the concepts of project management work products, work models, and project management systems. Therefore, PMBOK is a static method that summarizes the knowledge and process of project management. The project management method of IBM is not only expanded based on the application of PMBOK, at the same time, it provides the concept of work products, work models, and project management systems for project management, and becomes a dynamic methodology that can guide project managers in their work.

 

It is the most appropriate choice for enterprises to define their own process domains, collect their own process domain practices, and introduce and define good practices from other companies.
