In many ways, the word Internet of Things is not enough to cover everything, compared to the internet of Things (IoE, everything). The power of the Internet of everything lies in the variety of information that is collected about you and me by its equipment.

Imagine the actual operation of such devices, almost all of which must be online with the service provider's central server. This means that the industry can see everything you've done on the device. You must trust that these business people will keep your data in good faith and will not be used for improper purposes, nor will they be forgotten for a long time.

Unfortunately, your information is likely to be abused or compromised. For example, the devices themselves may not be secure, and any hacker can easily invade. The modules used by these devices are likely to come from some open source schemes, so it is likely that they will be exploited for a long time, and vendors may not have thought carefully about how to update these devices quickly and easily. In addition, the central server itself may be subject to targeted attacks by hackers and data leakage.

We haven't even discussed what a service provider might do with your data. Unless you have carefully read the manufacturer's privacy policy, you probably don't know exactly what the IOE device will collect. But these privacy policy provisions are difficult to understand, and the future is likely to be changed at any time without notifying consumers.

Although the privacy policy allows us to know what data the device collects, it does not fully disclose what your data might be used for. For example, many articles would say that data will be used to provide its services, but in fact, this broad general rule is often the legal basis for the use of data and even misuse.

So what should the user do? Before purchasing any connected device, it is important that you understand that any data you provide is likely to be stored on an unsecured server and in a data center in other countries, and it will be in place for a long time. The longer you store your personal data on the vendor's servers, the higher the risk to you. Some of these risks also include data breaches, data sharing and trafficking, and the risk of general data loss due to corporate security breaches, mergers and acquisitions, and so on.

If you are a privacy-conscious consumer, it is recommended that you first ask your business or vendor's technical support what data the device collects and transmits to the manufacturer (e.g., personal identification information, user account password, etc.). In addition, when you compare different providers for a particular service, check out their privacy policy and see which one compares to reassure you. By reviewing the privacy policy in detail and understanding how your data may be used by the manufacturer, you have made the right first step.

At the same time, think about it, many startups may not yet have a good business model to go. Your data is very important to those who are starting out, and even allows them to make more money from the service, which can make your data abused. One might argue that vendors who start charging higher fees may not be able to make money in the future by trying to use your data, but no one can guarantee that the data is a key element of the IoE. Reputable vendors usually try their best to maintain their own signboards, perhaps a better choice, but there is no absolute guarantee.
