Windows 2000 contains a tool called DCPROMO. EXE, which is used to upgrade an independent/member server to a domain controller, or in Windows 2000, the domain is the DNS name, which means you have a domain hierarchy, the relationship between parent and child domains also exists. The advantage of parent-child relationship is that it has two-way, transfer-based delegation. That is to say, if Domain B is a subdomain of Domain, domain c is the subdomain B of Domain B, and domain c is the subdomain B of Domain a. Therefore, Domain c implicitly delegates Domain. This is different from earlier Windows NT versions. Because Windows 2000 Domain depends on DNS, you must configure DNS correctly to create a domain (if you want to create a new top-level domain ). For information on how to configure DNS in the domain, see "question: How do I configure DNS in the Windows 2000 Domain ?".
In addition, you must have an NTFS5.0 volume label to overwrite the SYSVOL volume label, and ensure that at least one NTFS5.0 volume label exists (use CHKNTFS to check the version information of your partition ).
Follow these steps to upgrade an independent/member server to a domain controller:
1. Start tool DCPROMO (Start-Run-DCPROMO)
2. Click Next on the overview page.
3. Now you can select "New Domain" or "Copy of the domain controller of the existing domain" ("Replica Domain controller in existing domain "). In NT5.0, there is no BDC concept, and all domain controllers are equal (more or less :-)). Select "new domain" and click Next.
4. There is a new concept-tree, which leads to the idea of subdomains. If you want to start a new top-level domain, select "Create new domain tree". If you want to Create a subdomain, select "Create new child domain" ("Create new child domain "). Click Next.
5. if you choose to Create a new domain tree, you will be asked if you want to Create a new domain tree forest "Create a new forest of domain trees ", add the new domain tree to the existing forest "put this new domain tree in an existing forest ". The forest allows you to join "join" some separated domain trees and establish a deliverable delegate relationship among them. If this is your first NT5.0 domain tree, you should create a new forest. Click Next.
6. Now you will enter the DNS name of your domain. For example, savilltech.com is a legal domain name. Remember, this should match the information configured on the DNS server. Click Next.
7. Then you will be asked to enter the NetBIOS domain name. By default, it is the left part of the DNS domain name (up to 15 characters on the left), such as savilltech, but it can be changed. Click Next to go to the Next step. 8. Now you want to provide a storage area for Active Directory and Active Directory log. Click Next without changing the default value.
8. Now you want to provide a storage area for Active Directory and Active Directory log. Click Next without changing the default value.
9. Finally, you need to select a region on the NTFS5.0 partition with the SYSVOL volume label to store the server's public files. The default value is % systemroot % SYSVOL. Click Next.
10. The following options can weaken the security of the Windows 2000 preview version, such as the 4.0 RAS server. Select your option and click Next.
11. Now you need to enter the Administrator password for Directory Server recovery mode. Click Next.
12. A summary screen is displayed. Click Next to start the upgrade. It needs to set security and create a directory server plan container. If the machine is an upgraded PDC, it will read the default path service file and old SAM information.
13. Click Finish to restart the machine.
Now you have a Windows 2000 Domain Controller. Follow the above method and select "domain controller copy of existing domain" ("Replica domain controller in existing domain") in step 3 to add other domain controllers (old BDCs ). This will ask you the domain copy name.
