Windows Preinstallation Environment (also known as Windows PE and WinPE) is a lightweight version of Windows used for the deployment of PCs, Workstations, and servers, or troubleshooting an operating system while it is offline. It is intended to replace MS-DOS boot disks and can be booted via USB Flash drive, PXE, Ipxe,[1] CD-ROM, or hard disk. Traditionally used by large corporations and OEMs (to preinstall Windows client operating systems on PCs during MANUFACTU Ring), it's now widely available free of charge via the Windows automated installation Kit (WAIK).
- WinPE is a simplified version of Microsoft Windows, placed on a direct-bootable CD or DVD disc, featuring a boot-time version of Windows PE that simplifies the boot screen from the original version, as well as a simple graphical interface (GUI) that can also run the Internet Explorer.
- WinPE supports the network, but only comes with the following tools: Command prompt, Notepad, and some command prompt maintenance tools.
- WinPE was originally designed to make it easy for businesses to manufacture customized Microsoft Windows, so it is not and cannot be sold (but allowed to be paid out) on the market.
- With Microsoft's approval, other software companies can attach their own software to WinPE, making it possible for the computer to run relevant programs. These software is usually system maintenance, in case the computer does not function properly, can use the relevant system maintenance software to repair the computer. Maintenance software includes Symantecnorton Ghost and so on.
- The installer for Windows Vista, windows 7,windows 8 is also based on WinPE.
