How to disable the Windows ten RS4 Timeline feature

Starting with insider Preview Build 17063, Microsoft added the Timeline feature to Windows RS4. Simply put, this feature allows users to view their activity history and quickly return to previous tasks.

Students who are using the Windows RS4 Preview may find that the task view feature for legacy Windows 10 has disappeared and is replaced with a timeline. You can sync the timeline between all your devices through your Microsoft account, but if you're not used to the timeline's operational logic (of course you have to learn to get used to it), or you're using a local account, the traditional task view is more appropriate for you, so in this tutorial, The It House Geek Academy will teach you how to disable the Timeline feature in Windows RS4.

To disable the timeline feature, there are two ways to do this by editing the Group Policy and by modifying the registry, as listed below.

To disable the timeline feature by editing Group Policy

If your computer is running a Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise/Education Edition, you can disable the system's timeline feature by editing Group Policy. In this section, the methods we mention apply to Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise/education.

Search and Run "gpedit" (without quotation marks) in Microsoft Cortana.

Navigate to the following directory through the tree-like list on the left side of the window:

\ Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ System \os policy \

After you expand the table above, move your gaze to the right side of the window, where you will see the "Enable Activity feeds" item.

Double-click this item and you will see the following window:

Check the checkbox in the left-hand corner of the window, click the OK button in the bottom right of the window, close the window, close the Group Policy Editor, and restart the computer.

When the computer restarts, the timeline feature in Windows RS4 is successfully disabled.

To disable the timeline feature by modifying the registry

If your computer is running a Windows 10 Home Edition, the Group Policy Editor will not be available. In this section, the method we mention applies to Windows 10 Home Edition, in addition to Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise/education.

Search and Run "regedit" (without quotation marks) in Microsoft Cortana.

Navigate to the following directory:

\hkey_local_machine\software\policies\microsoft\windows\system\

After you navigate to the above directory, move the mouse cursor to an empty area on the right side of the window, right-click, select New-dword (32-bit) value, and name this value:

Enableactivityfeed

Double-click the value we just created named Enableactivityfeed, set its value data to 0 in the popup window, and then click the OK button in the lower right corner of the dialog box.

After you close Registry Editor and restart your computer, the timeline feature in Windows 10 is disabled successfully after the computer restarts.

How to restore the Timeline feature in Windows RS4

The ability to restore the timeline in Windows RS4 is simple, and we just need to reverse the operation.

If you are disabling the Timeline feature in Windows RS4 by editing Group Policy, to restore this functionality, simply open the Group Policy Editor and navigate to the following directory:

\ Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ System \os policy \

Set the Enable activity feeds item in this directory to Not configured.

If you are disabling the Windows RS4 Timeline feature by modifying the registry, to restore this functionality, simply open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following directory:

\hkey_local_machine\software\policies\microsoft\windows\system\

The following key values are found:

Enableactivityfeed

and set the value data of the key values to 1.
