Internet Tools in Linux environment (i)

At present, Linux is very hot in the media, but the application of ordinary users in the more elementary stage. The reason for this situation is that most of the applications under Linux are not simple enough. This article will introduce a series of Internet tools based on Linux operating system in detail, hoping to provide a preliminary understanding to the readers.

First, dial-up Internet and browser

When we use a modem to surf the Internet, we need to configure dial-up Internet access in Windows, which is to configure PPP. Also, we need to configure PPP for dial-up Internet access in Linux. Under Linux, we use the dial-up tools provided by KDE to easily establish a PPP dial-up. With this tool, even beginners can set up dial-up Internet in a matter of minutes.

In Windows environments, people typically use Internet Explorer browsers and Netscape Communicator browsers.

Under the Linux X window, we can choose from a variety of web browsers, including Netscape Communicator, opera and lynx.

1.Netscape Communicator Introduction

Like the Communicator on the Windows platform, Netscape provides complete source code, as well as compiled binary code. The Communicator 4.71 for Linux program interface is identical to the Communicator interface under Windows 9x, and it runs very stably on Linux. The Communicator browser works as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1 Communicator Interface

Readers who need the package can access the http://home.netscape.com/download/client_download.html page and choose a software package that fits their kernel version. The RedHat Linux 5 version already has Netscape Communicator 4.0x software packages, which are installed by default for each release of the installation program when the system is installed. Currently Communicator browser's latest stable run version is 4.61.

For other distributions, users should also pay attention to selecting the appropriate packages, and note the types of packages, because we need to download different packages when we use different libraries.

Netscape Communicator 4.51 has a compressed file size of around 10MB, which includes components such as e-mail, news reading, and page writers.

When the download is complete, first unzip it with Gzip, and then run its setup program. The installation commands are as follows:

#./ns-install

Once the installation is complete, we can run Netscape Communicator under Linux.

The configuration for Netscape Communicator is identical to the configuration under the Windows 9x operating system.

2.Opera Introduction

Opera is a sophisticated browser, only about 2MB, although very small, but full-featured. Users can download an opera Linux version to the relevant site. At present, the latest opera is 4.0Beta. Opera 4.0 Beta performance is shown in Figure 2.

3. Lynx INTRODUCTION

Lynx is a plain text browser, does not download picture information, so browsing speed is very fast, suitable for a large number of text data query work.

Second, the FTP client

In the process of surfing the Internet, we often need to download software, the people like to use Unix are accustomed to using the command line FTP. In fact, under the Linux X window, there are many graphical interface of the FTP tools available for us to choose from. Let's get to know these common download clients together.

1.MXFTP Introduction

Mxftp is an X window under the FTP client software, the Internet has GTK and motif version can be downloaded. Mxftp is a perfect FTP tool under the X window and doesn't feel any different from ws_ftp. Mxftp operation effect as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3 Mxftp Interface

In fact, Mxftp is just a jacket of an FTP process that displays the file systems of local and remote computers on a graphical interface, delivering files between local and remote systems. Its functionality is actually equivalent to the FTP-get and pub features in Unix. There are areas on the graphical interface that prompt the user to log on.

Like other FTP tools under Windows 9x, MXFTP also requires the user to provide a login (typically an anonymous logon account anonymous) and a user to enter a remote FTP server to log on to. By default, the user name is anonymous and the password is "user@organisation.com" (the user's e-mail address). After that, the user clicks on the connection button, whether or not the login is successful, the relevant information will be given in the information area under the window. In the Mxftp run window, users can also choose how to transfer files, which are available in two ways: file mode and binary mode.

Readers can download the Mxftp software on the http://www.ajsoft.demon.co.uk/mxFtp.html page.

2. Introduction to other download tools

In addition to MXFTP software, some of the following FTP download clients are also more commonly used.

(1) Kget: This is a software download using the QT library, which is somewhat similar to GetRight. The software can monitor the Clipboard and support the continuation of the breakpoint.

(2) Gftp: This is a use of GTK library FTP software, similar to cute-ftp, support upload and download.

(3) Wget: It is a command line commonly used FTP software, the function is very powerful, in addition to supporting the continuation of the breakpoint, but also support directory travel, you can completely mirror a site to the local.

(4) nc-0.99: is a gtk based download software, and kget very similar.

Third, the extension of the breakpoint

There are many tools for breaking breakpoints in Windows, such as GetRight, network vampires, Internet ants, and so on. Is there a similar tool under Linux? The answer is yes.

1. Download tool

Kget is a download tool that runs under the Linux KDE window, similar to Windows GetRight, network ants, and so on. Users need to compile their own kget, the compilation process is very simple, just follow the instructions from the software to compile. Fig. 4 is the Kget operation chart.

When downloading software using Kget, the progress of the download will be displayed as a percentage.

2. Mirroring Tool

If readers want to mirror a site on the Internet, you can use Xsitecopy to do this in a Linux operating system. Figure 5 is a picture of a site being mirrored using xsitecopy.

Xsitecopy can be downloaded from Jinshan's premier Linux software download area. It should be noted that after downloading the xsitecopy, you have to compile it yourself.
