After reading through the book, I have a more in-depth understanding of "civilization". Compared to the whole universe, human beings are small, human life is short, and mankind is always in a better direction in the development, which is the "civilization" in effect. "Civilization" brings people a positive attitude, an upward force, so that our lives more convenient and beautiful.
As an IT practitioner, I am particularly interested in the chapters in this book that describe computers and the Internet. Miss Wu believes that the future of the computer will reflect the "three No" features: ubiquitous, no time, omnipotent, and now the Internet has entered the Internet 3.0 times.
Because of the nature of the work, I have to deal with computers and the Internet almost every day. I think the features of the future computers are as follows:
First, the computer's network processing power is increasing, and the local processing power is decreasing. Now, if a computer is not networked, I think very few people will use it. Based on the development of cloud computing technology, many of the operations that were done locally, such as document reading and writing, were moved to the cloud. Therefore, in the future, the network processing power will become a measure of the performance of a computer is an important criterion, and rely on the computer for local processing of less and fewer operations.
Second, computers are available everywhere and on call. When the first computer was invented, the volume was quite large. According to the book, ENIAC covers an area of more than 160 square meters, weighing up to 30 tons. I think people who play tablets on the subway today will be surprised if they hear that the "ancestor" of the computer is such a big monster. In the future, with the mobility of people and the need for work and life, everyone needs to be able to use the computer anytime, anywhere, and can be put away (or even folded) when it is not used. Personally, the future of computer customization will be more, because the computer design to fit the characteristics of all kinds of people.
Thirdly, the computer becomes the man's great arm and completes most of the daily work for mankind. With the further enhancement of machine intelligence, much of the work in the future can be done by computers, such as: transporting goods, cleaning, directing traffic, driving cars and so on. By that time, computers would be good helpers for humans, and humans would only need to focus on some creative work.
For the future of the Internet, I think it will present the following features:
First, the "Matthew Effect" on the internet will be more pronounced. Matthew effect refers to the stronger the strong, the weaker the weak phenomenon. With the further development of technology, "Matthew Effect" will be the most obvious embodiment on the Internet. Internet companies with a large number of users will attract more users, and the popularity of high-volume websites will be further improved. In individuals, people who use the Internet regularly will have more Internet skills and more information, and less Internet users will be more blocked.
Second, Internet users will change from "active" to "passive", and all kinds of information will be "pushed" to the user. In the early days of the development of the network, each user was active in the Internet to obtain the information needed (so that the development of major websites and search engines). With the development of the Internet, to provide people with increasingly diversified channels of information, a lot of information will be "pushed" to users (such as information push), the role of users will be from "active" to "passive".
Thirdly, everyone will be the provider of Internet content. With the progress of society and the improvement of civilization, we can get a lot of information, there will be a willingness to express personal ideas. At the same time, many self-media (such as, Weibo, etc.) have developed rapidly, providing a good platform for everyone to show their own. In the future, everyone (age, education, nature of work, etc.) can easily add content to the Internet, and everyone will be the provider of Internet content.
I learned a lot from the third volume of the Light of civilization (and the first two volumes). My greatest feeling is that the wheels of human progress are driven by civilization. No matter whose invention and contribution, the ultimate embodiment of civilization is to promote the progress of mankind as a whole.
