Introduced

ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is a network Connection Sharing service built into Windows 2000 that makes it easy for home or small office network users to connect to the Internet.

To use ICS, there are a few things to note:

(1) ICS-enabled computers must have two network interfaces: one connected to an internal LAN, typically a network adapter, and one connected to the Internet, usually a modem or ISDN interface.

(2) To configure ICS, you must have Administrators group permissions.

(3) When the ICS setting is complete, the local network will use a dynamic address allocation mechanism and should not be used with other Windows Server DCs, DNS servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured as static IP addresses.

(4) When ICS is enabled, adapters that connect to the home or small office network will get a new IP address configuration. There are two scenarios, one that is recommended by the system to use dynamic allocation, at which point the ICS-enabled computer acts as a DHCP server, and the other is manually set up.

Environment and requirements

The customer's current network environment is as follows:

Number of computers: 5, including 3 desktops (hereinafter referred to as C1, C2, C3), two laptops (hereinafter referred to as N1, N2);

Current operating system: Windows98 (first edition);

LAN Overview: Through a 10M 8-port hub to form a star peer network, sharing information between each other through the network;

Connecting to the Internet: only C1 and N1 can dial the Internet, where C1 uses the modem with ISDN,N1.

Customer Requirements:

Use existing devices to enable all computers to connect to the Internet;

Important programs are installed on existing computers or have important data stored, so you cannot reinstall the operating system unless you have to.

Connection scheme:

Because C1 has an ISDN device installed and has a higher configuration (PIII 850 cpu,128m memory), it is decided to start Internet sharing on C1 and other computers to connect to the Internet via C1.

Since WINDOWS98 supports ICS from the second edition and is not very stable, it is decided to upgrade C1 to Windows2000 Pro.

Server settings

First, upgrade Windows98 to Windows2000 Pro;

Start Windows98, insert Windows2000 Pro into the CD drive, Windows2000 Pro Installer to start automatically, and follow system prompts until the upgrade is complete.

4, switch to the "Options" tab, when the system will prompt "Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, LAN adapter will be set to use IP address 192.168.0.1." The computer may lose its connection to other computers on the network. If these computers have static IP addresses, they should be set up to automatically obtain an IP address. Do you really need to enable Internet Connection Sharing? ", select" Yes "and ICS is started.
