One of the Windows Server R2 Working folders installation Chapter

First, simply connect to the working folder under Windows Server 2012

Working folders experienced by information workers

To demonstrate how it works, here's an example where information worker Joe can work from any device and may use working folders to separate his work data from personal data: When Joe saves a document in the work Folders directory on his working computer, the document is synchronized to the IT Control of the file server. When Joe comes home, he picks up his Surface RT (where the documents are synced) and goes to the beach. He can work on the document offline, and when he comes home, the document will be re-synchronized with the file server, and when he arrives at the office the next day, he can see all the changes made the previous morning.

Familiar? In fact, this is exactly how a consumer storage service like SkyDrive works and business collaboration services like SkyDrive Pro work. Our user interactions are as simple and familiar as possible, so there is little need to educate users. The biggest difference with SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro is that the central storage device for working folders is a local file server running Windows server R2, which we'll cover later in this blog post.

Working folders experienced by IT administrators

IT administrators can use work folders to better control corporate data and user devices, and to centralize the user's work data so that appropriate processes and tools can be applied to enable the company to comply with relevant laws and regulations. This includes a range of features that users have when they leave the company and have copies of the data to backup, retention, classification, and automated encryption.

For example, when a user creates a sensitive document in a working folder on their working PC, the document is synced to the file server. The file server then automatically categorizes the document based on the document content, and if you use File Server Resource Manager to configure encryption, it also encrypts the document using Windows rights Management Services and then synchronizes the document back to all of the users ' devices. This enables users to have a seamless experience while enabling organizations to comply with relevant laws and regulations and to prevent the disclosure of sensitive information.

Working folder features

Work folders are part of the "people-centric IT" pillar in Windows Server R2. This pillar includes additional important features such as workspace join, WEB application proxy, and device management. While these features are integrated, they are independent of each other, so you can use them as stand-alone solutions to get immediate value when you deploy each feature.

For working folders, our design focuses on making it easier for information workers to use, while enabling IT administrators to use familiar, low-cost, highly extensible Windows file servers and all the rich capabilities of the backend for high availability and comprehensive data management.

The following are some of the features that work folders contain:

    • Provides a single point of access to the user's work and work files on personal PCs and devices (Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, which are designed to follow recent plans for Windows 7 and IPAD support, as well as other devices that may be available in the future)

    • Access working files while offline and synchronize with the central file server the next time the PC or device connects to the Internet or network

    • Encrypt data in transit and static data on devices, and allow device management services such as Windows Intune to erase company data

    • Use existing file server management techniques, such as file classification and folder quotas, to manage user data

    • Specify security policy to instruct users ' PCs and devices to encrypt work folders and use lock screen passwords and other features

    • Use failover clustering for work folders to provide a high availability solution

Several scoping decisions that we made in this release are well worth mentioning, and it enables us to complete working folders with a shorter Windows Server R2 release cycle:

    • Back-end storage is provided by the local file server, and the working folder must be stored in local storage on the file server (for example: Data can reside on a local share on Windows server R2)

    • Users are synced to their own folder on the file server-syncing any file share (ex: Syncing a sales demo share to my device) is not supported

    • Work folders do not provide collaboration features, such as sharing synced files or folders with other users (it is recommended that you use SkyDrive Pro if you need document collaboration features)

Working folders compare to other Microsoft synchronization technologies

Finally, I want to discuss the extent to which working folders are applicable to other synchronization solutions offered by Microsoft, primarily SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro. As mentioned above, working folders provide a solution for customers who prefer to use traditional Windows file servers as back-end storage to store company data that is synced from user devices. It is ideal for organizations that have already used a home folder or folder redirection solution, or who have established practices for managing and storing user data on a file server.

For customers using SharePoint, SkyDrive Pro is an excellent solution that offers many additional features from rich collaboration capabilities to cloud services with Office 365

The following table shows the different options:

The roles required for this lab deployment include: One DC,DNS,CA, one for working folder servers

Because of the previous environment when I deployed Exchange and Lync, I had prepared the DC,DNS and CA role servers, and this time the experiment was mostly about deploying working folder servers!

The following begins the installation of the work folders role, first the working folder server needs to join the domain, then open Server Manager, click Manage-Add roles and features

This is normal and we do not need to enable it because the default IIS port is occupied by the working folder. The next article describes the configuration of the working folder.
