A good story-book illustrator knows how to tap the child's imagination. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a magical story-book illustration. The illustrations mainly depict a child riding on a pet spider. This tutorial contains text descriptions and video content. Let's start learning how to make it.

1. Configure brushes

Step 1

For this tutorial, we will combine the basic round brush with a drawing board to use. Open the Brush Control Panel F5. 1-Choose a brush tip shape, you can choose from the brush you have downloaded, change the size, hardness or spacing. 2-In shape dynamics, control the selection of pen pressure. 3-In the dispersion, choose to control the pen pressure to control the flow of the line. You can combine all of these features and join the opacity to make the brush you want.

2. Document setup

Step 1

Create a new file (via File > New (Command/ctrl/ctrl + N).) Select the International Paper type in the preset size for A4.

Step 2

Use the Paint bucket tool (G) and a medium ash to fill the background layer.

3. Sketch Creation

Step 1

Let's add a new layer (Shift + Command/ctrl + N) and start sketching. Use the number of layers you think you need. You can start by drawing a basic shape, such as a circle or a guide, and slowly begin to define the picture. Here temporarily use loose straight line for painting, do not worry about details, refinement work will be placed in the back. The most important thing now is the composition of the picture and the design of the whole.

4. Improved sketch

Step 1

Let's lower the saturation of the point sketch a bit and add a layer below. Select the Gradient tool (G) and make a linear gradient from dark gray to bright color, from top to bottom.

In this way, our limited global light will come from behind and above.

Place a new layer underneath the sketch and start with a different gray to get a rough distinction.

Choose a black and bright gray. Use the opacity mode to make sure your tone doesn't change.

You can flip the image to check for errors that occur in the shape.

Once the changes are correct, slightly reduce the opacity of the sketch and flip the image again.

Start clear the drawing and add some details, though just roughly. Use the number of layers you need.

To keep the layers in order, we clustered each layer in the group. Select all the layers you currently have and put them in a group. This will be the sketch folder.

Create a new group for the child above and reduce the opacity of the layer to the sketch line

5. Draw the basic shape

Step 1

Begin to limit the shape of the child and make it clear.

Step 2

Start adding shadows to differentiate elements, and then give the image a little more detail.

Now add a little light.

Step 4

Use a soft brush with opacity to clear the picture.

Step 5

Create a new group for the Spider.

Then perform the same steps as the child.

Step 6

To make the iris, use a pressure-free brush on a new layer.

Step 7

Add a clipping mask to the iris layer. To complete this step, just add a new layer to the top and ALT + click between two layers. Use a soft, low opacity brush to paint shadows and light.

Step 8

Add some of the brightest areas to a new layer.

6. Refine the spider

Step 1

Let's start painting the spider's hair and use the hair brush, these are my illustrations in the tutorial "Creating a Lovely child".

Make a straight line with the shape of your body.

Step 2

On a new layer, use the Elliptical Marquee tool (M) to select the area of the eye. Press the SHIFT key while creating the selection to make the perfect circle.

Step 3

Fill the empty area, then complete the circle, and place a shadow around the edge to create the volume effect.

Step 4

Press Shift+command/ctrl+i to reverse the election. At the bottom of a positive stack, use black gray to darken the shaded area.

Step 5

Press Command/ctrl + D to cancel the selection. Click the mouse on the eye layer and use the Blur tool to gently blur the edges.

7. Painting Plants

Step 1

Now go and make the leaves of plants, create a new group, and make a leaf. Roughly draw the volume shape, as shown below.

Copy the leaf layer. This can be done with ALT and drag-and-drop layers. Then press Command/ctrl + t to move, flip, and reset the size.

Step 3

Once you are satisfied with the position of the leaf, use a hard brush to add details to each layer. Don't forget to draw a planned shadow on the other leaves.

Step 4

Click each layer by CTRL + to select all of them.

Step 5

Create a layer at the top to blur the bottom.

Step 6

In the color filter mode, create a layer with low opacity, and use a moderate gray to highlight the top.

Step 7

Create a new group on the back of the plant. Copy one of the leaves and use levels (Command/ctrl + L) to make them brighter. As shown in the following figure.

Step 8

Let's continue to add leaves, remember, you can flip, rotate, resize, bend them and so on (only need to press COMMAND/CTRL+T, and right click the mouse to select mode) ... Until you are satisfied with what they look like.
