Learning goals: How to use filters and layer functions to simulate the effects of Guevara classic portraits

Operation time-consuming: 10 minutes

Few photos in people's minds can be more than the artist Jim Fitzpatrick the photographer Alberto Korda lens under the Guevara portrait of the classic deduction. Strong colors and simplified details make this picture very easy to recognize and remember. Like other great works of art, the work affected later artists, including the poster Obama used in the presidential campaign.

The effect of reproducing this classic in Photoshop is very simple, except that the tools and techniques involved in the process are quite different from what we normally use when dealing with photos. To achieve this particular effect, we need to use the special effects filter. But before performing a filter operation, you first need to use the threshold feature to simplify the photo to a high-contrast picture with only Black-and-white color. In order to make our photos look more modern, finally we used a layer blending mode to add texture to the picture, enrich the depth of the picture.

You can also use your own photo experiment after you have completed the tutorial with the documentation we provided. Before using the threshold command, you can use the image > Adjust > Shadow/Highlight feature to optimize the photo tone ahead of time, converting the photos to Black-and-White can also help us more clearly grasp the picture shade distribution. In addition, when the color knife filter is executed, the different stroke size setting can also bring different details to our photos, which is worth a try.

1. Remove background

Open the file, long press the Lasso tool icon and select the Polygon Lasso tool in the pop-up menu. Enlarge the screen and use the tool to carefully select the entire character along the edge of the character. Open the Adjust Edge window and set the smoothing option to 20.

2. Use thresholds

Use the shortcut key CTRL + C and CTRL + V to copy the selection and paste it onto a new layer. Perform image > Adjust > Thresholds, the left and right moving threshold slider can change the proportion of the black and white tone in the adjustment results. This photo, set to 85, allows the character to be very well represented.

3. Simplify the details

Use the standard Lasso tool to select the person's eyes, nose, and mouth, to open filter > Art > Toner, set the stroke size to 8, set the details to 2, and click OK. Next, select > reverse, and increase the stroke size value to 35 to perform the toner filter again.

4. Choose Black

Select the Magic Wand tool, turn off continuous options in the upper toolbar, and click to select the black portion of the processed portrait. Select Layer > New > Layer, perform Edit > Fill, and set the fill color to black in the pop-up menu. Use the shortcut key Ctrl + D deselect to rename the layer to portrait.

5. Add Gradient

Create a new layer below the portrait layer. In the toolbar menu, set the foreground color to #c10000, and the background color #c70000. Select the Gradient tool, and the mode is set to a radial gradient. Draw a gradient line from the character's face to the lower-left corner of the screen and use a red gradient to spread the background.

6. Overlay Texture

Execute "File > Place", select Background_texture.jpg and tap Enter to determine. In the layers panel, set the blending mode of the placed layer to soft light. Finally, use the Eraser tool to remove unwanted black stain areas from the portrait layer. Select Layer > Flatten image to complete the operation.

Expert skills

"Although the use of the technology in the classic image works can make your work quickly attract other people's attention, but to really improve the best is to add their own ideas." For example, in this tutorial we use gradient fills and texture layers to bring different effects and feelings to a photo. ”
