According to RFC 2462, all IPV6 nodes automatically configure a link-local address for each interface. IPV6 hosts can also use router discovery (Swap router requests and Router Advertisement messages) to determine other addresses and configuration settings. The Router Advertisement message sent by the router contains the managed address configuration (M) token and other stateful configuration (O) tags that indicate whether the host should use DHCPV6 to obtain additional addresses or configuration settings.

IPV6 type of automatic configuration

In addition to linking to local addresses, hosts can use stateless Autoconfiguration to configure addresses and other settings based on the Router Advertisement messages that they receive. These messages can contain one or more prefix information options that can be used by the receiving host to derive a stateless address.

Similarly, stateful autoconfiguration means configuring addresses and other settings by using DHCPV6 to obtain addresses. The host uses stateful autoconfiguration when the M flag of the Router Advertisement message that the host receives is set to 1 o'clock.

Finally, the host can also use stateless and stateful autoconfiguration, which uses both the addresses included in the router bulletin and the addresses obtained from the DHCPV6 server.

Automatically configure the status of an address

If the automatic configuration address is in a tentative state, duplicate address detection (DAD) is verifying its uniqueness. For information about how to perform DAD, see the "RFC 2462 IPv6 automatic configuration Process" in the sidebar. Addresses that are in a valid state are verified to be unique and can be used to send and receive unicast traffic. Valid states include preference States and deprecated States. If you are in the preferred state, the address can be used for unrestricted communication. If you are in a deprecated state, the address cannot be used for new traffic, but existing traffic using that address can continue.
