In System Center 2012-operations manager, a group is a logical set of Windows-based computers, hard disks, Microsoft SQL Server instances, and other objects. You can use the create group Wizard to create a group. You can explicitly assign members to a group, or create rules that will generate dynamic group members.

The purpose of using a group is as follows:

1. Identifies the alternative scope as a specific group of computers.

2. Determines the scope of alert notifications or product connector subscriptions for a group of specific computers.

3. Determine the scope of the user console so that user roles can view only the servers they are responsible.

4. Determine the scope of a group of computers that need to enter the scheduled maintenance mode.

5. Define the scope of the application view as limited to computers hosting a given application.

6. Creates a summary running status view for a group of computers that are not related to the group.

7. Create a group of computers for reports.

You can create and manage groups in the "Create" workspace on the Operation console.

The computer group contains only computers. An instance group can contain all object types, such as running status service instances or SQL database instances. Both the computer group and instance group can contain other computers and instance groups. Another way to view the differences between group types is:

1. The instance group contains objects that meet your requirements.

If you are using the console, you can only create instance groups. To create a computer group, you must use the creation console or directly in the XML of the management package.
