In this section, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using different Windows operating systems for different types of ATMs. Next, we will provide some suggestions to determine whether Windows CE. net, Windows XP embedded, or Windows XP Professional with embedded restrictions are the best operating systems available.
Key Points
= Strongly recommended = not recommended
Types of ATM
When selecting an appropriate operating system, you must first consider the type of ATM. The following table lists Microsoft operating system recommendations for each type of ATM. For full-featured ATMs and ATMs with withdrawal functions, features and the latest security are important. Windows XP Professional or Windows XP embedded with embedded restrictions can be used. In the "Suggestion summary" section, you can find detailed advantages and disadvantages of using Windows XP embedded and Windows XP Professional.
Windows CE. NET is recommended for low-end ATMs with withdrawal functions. A low-end ATM with a withdrawal function is a single-Function Device with low requirements for memory and coverage. It runs a single or a limited number of applications.

System Requirements
When selecting an appropriate operating system, consider the technical specifications or system requirements of the devices that interest you. What are chipset, speed, and memory (RAM, Flash, hard disk, etc )?
If the device uses an Intel Pentium/celon, amd K6/athlon/duron or compatible processor and a minimum ram of 233 MB at 128 MHz or a higher frequency, we generally recommend Windows XP embedded or Windows XP Professional with embedded restrictions.
If you are using an x86 CPU, you can use Windows CE. Net or Windows XP. However, if you are using a non-x86 CPU, you must use Windows CE. net. It supports four microprocessor families, including:
- Arm:Supported processors include arm720t, ARM920T, arm1020t, Strongarm, and XScale.
- MIPs:Supported processors include mips ii/32 W/FP, mips ii/32 W/o fp, mips16, mips iv/64 w/FP, mips iv/64 w/o fp
- Shx:Supported processors include sh-3, sh-3 DSP, and sh-4
- X86:Supported processors include 486, 586, geode, Pentium I/II/III/IV
For the latest list of processors supported by Windows CE, see
"Supported processors" page.
