Random House, a German Publishing House, announced that it would publish the German version of Wikipedia as a book to satisfy readers who prefer to flip books rather than clicking the mouse.
Editors will select 50000 of the most popular articles from the German version of Wikipedia and edit them into a 1000-page-thick book, which will be released in September this year. Wikipedia's initial mission was to replace the paper encyclopedia. This book will be the crystallization of the general knowledge of the Wikipedia community, rather than the writings of experts and scholars. It will cover a wide variety of entries from Carla Bruni (First Lady of France) to PS3 to Donald Duck.
According to Random House of the Bertelsmann Group in Germany, the 50000 alternatives are based on the search term of 15 million Wikipedia users each month in Germany. Beate varnhorn, head of Bertelsmann lexicography, said, this will be a book that represents the spirit of the times.
The book will attract families that do not have a fixed internert connection, because the book is readily available and those who like to read it will also buy it. Arne klempert, a German spokesman for Wikipedia, said that since this book is only a summary of Wikipedia entries, it does not infringe the rights of those who submit articles to Wikipedia.
The German version of Wikipedia is located behind the English language and is the second largest language version of Wikipedia. Someone once calculated that if 2.3 million articles in the English version of Wikipedia are printed, it will be a thick 750-volume.
