Unconventional methods for Windows Server restart

BKJIA you may encounter some obstacles when you need to restart a Windows server. For example, if the remote desktop service cannot work normally, how do you restart the server? This is some of the techniques I have collected over the years to restart or shut down the system. When I cannot simply restart or shut down the system through the Windows Start Menu, these skills will be useful.

Shutdown.exe command

This gem will send a remote or local shutdown command to the system. Enter "shutdown/r/m \ servername/f/t 10" to send a remote restart command to a system. All modern Windows systems include shutdown.exe. In the past, shutdown.exe was included in the Resource Kit.

PowerShell Restart-Computer

Similar commands are also available in PowerShell:

Start-Sleep 10Restart-Computer -Force -ComputerName SERVERNAME

Hardware Management device:

If you are using devices like HP iLO or Dell DRAC, they provide virtual power buttons and remote screen control tools regardless of the operating system status. If the new servers are not configured on those devices, it is a good idea to control them when you configure them to make an OS unavailable.

VM power button

If the system is a virtual machine, all hypervisor will provide a button to reset the virtual power of the system. In VMware vSphere, you can set an option to "Shut Down" and "Guest Operating System" instead of "Power Off" and "Guest Operating System "; you can use VMware Tools to perform a normal shutdown. If it fails, the "Power Off" button is the next logical step.

Transfer control:

When the administrator of the server cannot physically access the system, it may be more effective to allow others to execute this process. For security reasons, you can create only one domain user or local user with the server restart permission ). The user can log on as a temporary user, and immediately destroy the user after the local shutdown command is issued. Furthermore, the temporary user can be configured to execute only one restart script on the system they log on to. In addition, they cannot assist the Administrator of the server in any other interaction.

Configure a scheduled task using the Group Policy:

If you cannot access a system in any other mainstream way-maybe Windows Firewall is enabled and you cannot close it, you can set a GPOGroup Policy object to reconfigure the fire wall state, and quietly execute a restart command in the shutdown.exe format in the upper command to remove the "/m" parameter ). The most difficult part is to quickly deploy GPOGroup Policy object ).

Enterprise-level system management software packages:

Software packages like Symantec's Altiris and Microsoft System Center can communicate with the Management Server or receive commands to restart the server.

Unplug the power:

This is indeed not an ideal method, but it is very effective. For a physical server, if you use a power outlet with port control, you can directly turn off the power of a system and restore it to normal.

Have you used other methods to restart a Windows server? You can share your methods in the comments.
