Use Ubuntu server to set up a standalone hard disk-based Windows file sharing and FTP server (i. Summary)

The headline wanted to use the keyword NAS, but given that it was not intended to create Web Administration pages, and some other complex features that did not avoid misleading, the scope was emphasized on "Windows file sharing" and "FTP Server". More precisely, it is the use of Samba and vsftpd two Linux programs.

The installation and use of samba and vsftpd are not difficult, and this article is only published as a note for yourself. The reason to abandon the use of off-the-shelf NAS servers, such as FreeNAS or Nas4free, is because the compatibility with Hyper-V is not good enough. If you have seen my previous article friends, I should remember that my home server is a (now two) configuration is also good old machine, the above running the Microsoft Hyper-V server, and all the other Windows Server, Linux server in the form of virtual servers exist, and focus on doing a small amount of things individually.

Not long ago I upgraded the master server, now configured as dual Xeon L5420 + 32GB memory, which is enough to toss. The above virtual servers include: Windows Home Server 2011 (Backup and file sharing), Windows Server R2 Core (domain controllers and DNS), Windows R2 (VPN and DFS), Ubuntu Se RVer 14.04 LTS (proxy server), Xubuntu 14.04 (MATLAB server).

All virtual server files reside on SSDs and two SSDs make up RAID 1. All servers that require mass storage plug in a traditional hard drive, and 4 1.5TB hard disks make up RAID 10 for Windows Home Server 2011 and Ubuntu to store data.

This combination maximizes operational speed and data security. The following is an approximate illustration:

This time the Ubuntu file Server +ftp server appears to overlap with Windows Home Server 2011 functionally, but in reality this is a plan I've been thinking about for a long time.

Windows Home Server 2011 is after all Microsoft has stopped pushing new products, although official technical support will last until 2017 years, but it has to be considered as a replacement.

In addition, the recent star events from icloud have proved my concern about cloud storage to be correct. I think the cloud makes it easy for us to work together and share non-sensitive files, but it's definitely not the ultimate storage solution for all the information. It's like you can't put cash in a safe and put a safe in someone else's place, even if the person promises you, "he'll be there for you, at your service."

No one can guarantee that the data will be stored in absolute security. If the data is sensitive enough, people who can trust at any time are still themselves. So, please do not put sensitive things in other people's places, buy more hard disk can not spend a few money.

Aside from the hard-to-use itunes, without considering cloud backup, the iphone backup solution can choose only Nas and FTP, so I have the idea of building my own FTP on Ubuntu. Of course, it's not difficult to join FTP support in Windows Home Server 2011, but my Windows Home server is external, and I always feel that it will be eliminated by me, so I don't want to rely too much on this system.
