On a computer running one of the Windows versions listed at the beginning of this article, if you map a drive to a network share, after a fixed period of inactivity, the mapped drive may be disconnected, and Windows Resource Manager may display a red "X" on the ing drive icon ". However, if you try to access or browse the mapped drive, it will reconnect quickly.
To solve this problem, change the default timeout period on the shared network computer. To do this, use one of the following methods.
Registry Editor
Warning improper use of the registry editor can cause serious problems and the operating system may need to be re-installed. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems caused by improper use of the registry editor. You are at your own risk to use the registry editor.
Use the registry editor to increase the default timeout period. Follow these steps to exit the registry editor:
Note: you cannot use this method to disable the automatic disconnection function of server services. You can only use this method to change the default timeout period of the automatic disconnection function.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit (Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003) or regedt32 (Windows NT 4.0), and then click OK ".
In the registry, locate and click the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServiceslanmanserverparameters
In the right pane, click the autodisconnect value, and then click modify on the Edit menu ". If the autodisconnect value does not exist, follow these steps:
On the "edit" menu, point to "new" and click "REG_DWORD ".
Type autodisconnect, and then press Enter.
On the "edit" menu, click "modify ".
Click hexadecimal ".
In the value data box, type ffffffff and click OK ".
Note: If the idle time is longer than the duration set in KeepConn, the client session will be automatically disconnected. Therefore, the session is disconnected based on the shorter duration value set in AutoDisConnect and KeepConn. To change the timeout time in the client during a UNC connection, specify any time in KeepConn.
In the registry, locate and click the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicelanmanworkstationparameters
Value: KeepConn
Data type: REG_DWORD
Range: 1 to 65535 (seconds)
Default value: 600 seconds = 10 minutes
Command line
Note: If you use this method, the automatic adjustment function of the server service may be disabled.
To change the default timeout period of the automatic disconnection function of server services, open a command prompt, type the following command line, and press Enter:
Net config server/autodisconnect: number
Number indicates the number of minutes that the server needs to wait before disconnecting the mapped network drive. The maximum value of this command is 65,535.
Note: Setting the automatic disconnection value to 0 does not mean that the automatic disconnection function is disabled, but means that the server service will disconnect the mapped network drive only a few seconds after it is idle.
To disable the automatic disconnection function, open a command prompt, type the following command line, and then press Enter:
Net config server/autodisconnect:-1
