Windows XP registry backup
The system cannot be started, applications cannot run, the system is unstable, and sometimes the system crashes. In this case, backup is very important, no one wants to crash and has to reinstall Windows XP. You can use different methods to back up your registry. You can also store your backup version on multiple media, but first, you must understand the file system type that your computer network is using. Windows XP supports FAT and NTFS file systems.
Below I will introduce several common backup methods:
I. Using MS Backup (this method is the most common and I will introduce it in detail)
MS Backup(ntbackup.exe) can back up the entire disk drive, and more importantly, even if the registry file is open and in use, MS Backup can also back up the registry, that is, MS Backup can also replicate the Registry when COPY, XCOPY, and implementation operations are not replicated.
1. Open the backup program in the "Start/Program/attachment/System Tools" menu, and click the "copy" tab after the program runs. The only way to back up the local registry in MS Backup is to select the "System Recovery" check box in the directory tree of the master Backup window. In the Backup Remote Registry, check the folder C: winnnt System32Config or a single file in the check box is valid, but it does not work when backing up your own registry. MS Backup allows you to check but does not back them up. Even the system status backup does not include the user-specified registry file NTUSER. DAT and USERCLASS. DAT file. Therefore, when you want to include all the registry files in the backup, you should also check them. These files may be stored in the C: Documents and Setting or C: WinntWrofile folder.
2. Select the system recovery check box in the left window.
3. Click "+" in drive C and select the check box next to the Documents and Setting folder.
4. Select "options" in the "Tools" menu to display the Options dialog box. On the "General" tab, select the "verify data after backup" check box. In this way, the backup takes a longer time, But it ensures that the backup exactly matches the original file.
5. On the "Copy type" tab, select "normal ". You also choose other, but "Normal" is suitable for fast registry backup.
6. On the "Copy logs" tab, select "detailed data"
7. Click "OK" after the configuration is complete and return to the main interface of the backup program. Click the Browse button to select the target device and save the file name.
8. Click the start renewal button. The backup job information dialog box is displayed. Click the Advanced button, deselect the check box marked with "automatic backup of system protected files with system status. If this option is selected, the backup content will be increased (when you only back up the registry ).
9. Click "OK" to close the "advanced backup options" check box, and then click "Start renewal.
After confirming, the program starts the backup and can view the backup Status Report at the end.
Ii. Backup tools-Back up data to tape or other media
This method is simple. You only need to select System State in the Backup tree, and you can back up the data or use the automatic System recovery wizard on the Backup's Welcome tab. With the selected ASR (Automatic System Recovery), the navigator creates three backup sets, which can be completed by following the wizard.
Iii. Use copy or xcopy for backup
When Windows XP is using the registry, the current registry cannot be copied back. Therefore, to use copy or xcopy to repair the registry, you must Disable Windows XP and start another such as DOS, windows 98/Me operating system, or the second Windows XP. (We recommend that you use a dual-system. For details about how to configure multiple systems, see "dual-boot configuration under Windows XP".) Using copy or xcopy to back up the registry is easier than using the Backup tool:
1. Run the Backup program and create an ASR floppy disk.
Copy your registry backup in the % SystemRoot % Repair directory to another location
2. Use xcopy to copy all the current registry files under the % SystemRoot % System32Config directory. The/c option can be used to make xcopy ignore errors (this is required because the current registry is being used. Otherwise, an error occurs ).
4. Backup method when FAT is used
By formatting a floppy disk with the/sys option, Windows XP users using the FAT file system can easily start DOS or Windows 98/Me (if FAT32 is used ). The doscommand prompt is displayed, which allows you to easily read and write the hard disk. To create a FAT-compatible boot floppy disk, you only need to add the/s System option to the FORMAT command of Windows 98/Me or DOS. Then put the xcopy (xcopy *. *) copy to this floppy disk. With this floppy disk, you can start it on a Windows XP Machine and freely access all the FAT-format drives on the computer. After the command prompt is displayed, it is a simple task to copy the registry files to a safe location. You can copy the files to another hard disk and several floppy disks, CD-R/CD-RW disc or other supported media on zips.
5. Use NTFS for backup (not recommended)
We have provided a detailed introduction to NTFS. Files on NTFS drives can only be written by Windows XP, but not on other operating systems. To access the Registry file on NTFS, you must install the second Windows XP.
6. Use RegEdit to verify the Registry
You can use the Registry Editor (RegEdit) to create another registry Backup and Restore by double-clicking a small icon. If you perform a simple primary step, you can create a backup that includes all the Registry content except the Security and SAM registration keys. The following uses RegEdit technology to back up the Security and SAM registration keys:
1. Run RegEdit.
2. Now we can see that My Coputer is highlighted.
3. Select the Export Registry file option in the Registry menu.
4. Find the Desktop, enter the name of the file, and click Save.
5. exit RegEdit.
The RegEdit version provided in Windows XP is output as a registry file in Unicode format.
It is important to put your backup files in a safe place.

Windows XP registry Restoration
To restore the registry, you must consider how you save the registry. Below I will talk about five common methods:
1. As long as Windows XP can be started, MS Backup can be used to restore the registry.
1. Open the backup program in the "Start/Program/attachment/System Tools" menu, and click the "Restore" tab after the program runs.
2. Click the plus sign next to the backup you created previously, and then select the "system status" check box.
3. Select "options" in the "Tools" menu to display the dialog box.
4. On the "Restore" tab, select "unconditionally replace files on the computer.
5. On the "Copy logs" tab, select "detailed data ".
6. After the settings are complete, press "OK" to return to the main interface of the program. And confirm the option "original location" in the "Restore file to" option box ".
7. After the setting is complete, click "start to restore" and confirm the "warning" dialog box.
8. Continue to confirm the "Confirm restore" prompt box.
9. After Entering the backup file name, click OK in the dialog box ". Finally, the program starts to restore the backup of the hungry registry. After completion, the program prompts to restart the computer and press "OK"
2. You can use the backup program to copy the Registry file to a tape or other connected or offline location. The backup program then restores the Registry file to its original location. This method is simple.
1. Restore from tape
When you use a Windows XP-compatible backup and recovery program, make sure that you choose to recover the local registry and that the only corrupted file in the registry is restored, restore other files.
2. Restore from other media supported by Backup
Use the Backup program of Windows XP to select System State from the Backup list for recovery. System State contains three items: boot file, COM + registration class and Registry (Note: it is impossible to partially restore System State data, but only to completely restore it ). In addition to System State, your ASR backup also includes other files. You can recover the files as needed. When Active Directory is running, the System State cannot be restored. The main difference between most backup and recovery programs is the compatibility between the user interface and the media. Do not forget. Generally, various tapes can only be restored using the same program that creates the tape backup.
3. recover from the copied Registry
You can copy the registry, create a copy file that is exactly the same as the Registry, and then copy them to the original location. In this way, you need to use the second operating system (for details about the multi-system configuration, see "dual-boot configuration under Windows XP") to copy the registry files back. The copy of the registry using the copy and xcopy commands must be restored in the opposite way. Follow these steps to restore the registry from the created license:
1. Start another operating system and use Windows XP/NT, DOS or Windows 98/Me for FAT, while Windows XP/NT for NTFS.
2. Save the current registry to a safe location to prevent the registry issues.
3. Copy the saved registry to the current registry location.
4. Start the Windows XP version in question, and test and observe whether the recovery is normal. If not, read down.
4. Use Setup to restore
The Backup program of Windows XP also saves the registry to the directory of % SystemRoot % Repair. You can use the Backup program of Windows XP to restore this file in the future. To recover the system registry correctly from the Repair directory and the ASR hard disk, you need to run the Windows XP Backup program. After Setup is started, it will check the bad disk and find the installed Windows XP system and their Repair directory. Once the check is complete, Setup provides some options, including pressing F2 to run ASR. If you cannot run ASR, Windows XP's Setup program will give you three options:
1. Start to install Windows XP and press Enter.
2. Use the Recovery Console to repair Windows XP and press the R key.
3. Terminate Windows XP installation and exit Setup. Press F3.
Press the R key to select the repair option, and then enter the repair mode and continue. Four options are displayed on the next screen.
