When you have to use another PC or mobile device to connect to a computer remotely, Microsoft's Remote Desktop is a savior. You can enable the "Remote Desktop" option under "Settings" and download the necessary applications on your smartphone. But some users have a black screen after successfully connecting to the remote computer.

Many users have encountered this problem in earlier versions of Windows. Some users also reported that the remote desktop client disconnected or crashed after seeing a black screen. Generally, there are many reasons for a black screen on the remote desktop. Below are some known troubleshooting methods.

let's start.

1. Update window
As always, we recommend that you update Windows 10 to the latest version. Your computer probably has some outstanding updates. Press the Windows key + I on the keyboard to open the settings and select "Update and Security".

Check if any updates are available. If so, please update and restart your computer once, and then try to connect remotely.

Note: Microsoft is aware of this problem and is currently repairing it. RDP errors are more common in Windows 10 version 1903, but may also affect other versions. Please pay close attention to the latest updates.

2. Update RDP client
I will use the Android application as an example for this article. Update your Microsoft Remote Desktop client, no matter which device you use it on. Open the app store on your Android device and search for remote desktop applications.

If an update is available, you will see the "Update" option. If not, you will see the "Open" option. There may be some compatibility issues between different versions of the application, which is why we recommend updating the application.

3. Start the task manager
If you can't view the desktop but only see a black screen when you remote desktop, then a temporary solution to this problem is to start the task manager. Press the Ctrl+Shift+Esc shortcut key to open the task manager.

You should now see the desktop. Keep the task manager open until you finish your work. Then, when you have time, you can troubleshoot the issue later.

Another option is to use the Ctrl+Alt+Del shortcut combination, it will pop up a blue screen, and one of the options is Task Manager.

4. Change the resolution
Setting the screen resolution higher than the recommended value will also cause the remote desktop to display a black screen. Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select "Display Settings".

Scroll a bit to find zoom and layout options. Under "Display Resolution", select the recommended resolution or try a lower resolution. Because the remote desktop will largely depend on the monitor screen size and system configuration.

5. Disable bitmap caching
Bitmap caching is a process in which the computer creates cache files of images and other resources and stores them on the local remote desktop client. Although suitable for low-bandwidth connections, it consumes resources and slows down the PC, sometimes causing desktop black screen errors.

Since this option does not apply to mobile applications, I will use the desktop application as an example. Search and open the RDP client, and then disable persistent bitmap caching under the "Experience" tab.

6. Update the graphics driver
Microsoft suggests that updating the GPU driver may help solve the problem of remote desktop black screen. Search for and open the device manager. Double-click the display adapter and right-click the graphics card to update it.

Before trying to connect to the remote desktop client, restart your PC once.

Wait, are you using an NVIDIA graphics card? It creates an overlay that allows users to take screenshots and record screens while playing games-also known as ShadowPlay. For some reason, it does not allow you to connect via RDP client. To disable it, open GeForce Experience> Settings> General tab> Disable sharing option.

7. Disable fast startup
Quick start is a feature of Windows, it can help restart your Windows laptop or wake it up quickly from hibernation. Open the control panel, search for and click on power options.

Click "Choose what the power button does."
First click "Change settings that are currently unavailable", and then check the "Turn on fast startup" option.
Finally save the changes.

8. Run sfc scan
The System File Check (sfc) tool will scan your computer to find damaged system files and repair them. Just open a command prompt with administrator rights, type the command below, and press Enter.

sfc /scannow

If it is a laptop, you need to connect it to a power source, because this process may take a while. Restart the computer after the scan is complete.

9. New User Account
If all else fails, you can try to create a new user account and see if it works. Press the Windows key + I to open the settings and click on the account.

Under "Family and other users", click the "Add others to this PC" option.

Follow the instructions on the screen to enter the user ID, password, and other details to create a new account. Once you are done, you can easily grant administrative rights to the account. Click the account name in "Settings" and select "Change Account Type".
Select Administrator from the drop-down menu here.

Switch the user account and try to connect to the user ID details of this new account from the remote desktop client. See if your desktop is still black, or it crashes afterwards.

In most cases, the remote desktop client should work as expected. However, there are still some undiscovered problems in Windows that may cause desktop black screen errors. Hope one of the solutions mentioned above is useful for you
