Now, when you open the headlines every day, it's all about the real world and the future of cloud computing. I am honored to have been invited to attend the two session a few weeks ago, and here I will share some of my views with you.

The first meeting was on "Business cloud Computing", sponsored by Opalevents. It was a relatively small meeting, but the delegates ' views on cloud computing at the meeting were perhaps the best end users I have ever seen. The second meeting is GigaOMStructure2011. The speeches are also great, giving us a sense of a new outlook for the IT future, and a painful transformation of how cloud computing will accomplish established it practices.

The most profound sentiment of my two meetings is that cloud computing has infiltrated IT companies, even without any "official" approvals or strategies, but its momentum in the IT business has become irreversible. Next, let me share my two weeks of harvest.

CIO shares successful business experience with cloud computing

Stevephillipott, Amylin's chief information officer at the "Business Cloud Computing" Conference, described the company's cloud computing business, which, over the past few years, has completely transformed its business model, conditioned by a difficult business environment, Completely into a complete reliance on the data center. Amylin is currently transferring data from all its local data centers to a remote outsourced data center provider.

At the same time, the pharmaceutical company is reassessing the deployment requirements of its applications, choosing Non-core Applications for SaaS migration, and programs that are related to enterprise strategy and that require a large number of IT resources will remain within the company. Amylin also enforces rigorous financial models to assess deployment options. It turns out that an external public cloud hosted application would expect to save an average of 30% to 50% of the cost. The applications written at the Force.com site are 1/8 to 1/10 of the same applications deployed within the enterprise.

Joel Manfredo is the CIO of Orange Co. (Orange Shawnee), who focuses on green it and how IT companies will respond to relevant reforms in the future. The most striking view of Mr Manfredo's speech is that because the PUE (power efficiency) of the leading cloud data center is on average about 1.2,manfredo 1.07 of the pue of Facebook's avowed open computing project is questioned, averaging 2.5 of the entire data center industry. Manfredo own data center is currently running at 1.77PUE. Of course, energy accounts for about 25% of the total cost of data centers, and management costs are about 50%.

One participant, working for a highly profitable consumer goods company, shared his experience, and his request to replace a desktop computer that had been in use for 15 years was dismissed. The reason is this: if the desktop is not broken, it may continue to take years. Perhaps what he says is a certain exaggeration, but it also seems to show that the system they are using has been in use for many years and is still able to run. A stark contrast to this is Phillipott, who is able to get enough resources to reduce total investment.

Structure2011: The Future of cloud computing

Instead, the Structure2011 Congress discussed more about the future of cloud computing. Cloud computing is evolving and, more importantly, various cloud-based applications are staggering. Briefings by various cloud service providers indicate that they are prepared to make cloud computing a leading role in the enterprise IT deployment in the future. A small number of earlier companies described the cloud computing approach, ensuring a dramatic change in application development and configuration.

Werner Vogels, the CTO of the Amazon, cited a rather startling fact in his speech titled "State of the Cloud". First of all, Amazon Network Services (AWS) S3 storage services, which reached 339 billion of the storage target in the first quarter of 2011. S3 had 212 billion storage objects at the end of the fourth quarter of 2010, that is to say, the service object grew by 29% in just a quarter of the time. I think its compound annual growth rate will reach 176%, which is definitely quite alarming. It's clear that people are starting to think of S3 as the world's largest external driving device, with new users starting to use S3 every day.

The second, rather frightening, example occurred in November 2010, when Amazon.com had completely converted its Web server to AWS. Imagine Amazon's huge load during the holiday shopping season (the company is currently the largest online retailer in the country), and it is clear that AWS is managing this huge application load. Also, during the holiday shopping season, when AWS supports Amazon.com, it must also support other people's data on cloud computing, so you can see how much of the infrastructure is available to AWS.

The impact of DevOps on it

The impact of cloud computing on IT companies is described as the evolution of cloud computing, the most it culture has changed the relationship between applications, developers, and administrators of infrastructure. To be honest, I was more or less uncomfortable at first when I was described as an emerging trend that was about to revolutionize the IT industry. In my view, cultural change is used for the whole enterprise Change category, is a terminal to the terminal seamless process of application lifecycle management changes, rather than disjointed method series.

In my opinion, DevOps is derived from the lifecycle operational requirements of upstream projects and the integration of participating project operations, such systems will be stronger and provide a higher level of service agreement.

In addition, operational tasks traditionally implemented by human administrators automatically capture a lot of code so that applications can automatically respond to changing conditions when they are running. And as time goes on and deployment changes, it tends to make the relationship between developers and operators constantly change, which will undoubtedly have a positive effect, will make applications more flexible, scalable, powerful, more critical core operating systems cheaper. It is important that devops applications operate in this way often as a key part of the value chain of an enterprise, involving the success or failure of the entire enterprise. Another point is that DevOps will account for 50% of the cost of managing the entire data center. In writing this blog, I found an interesting blog post describing a very clear way to transition to DevOps, which is completely different from the traditional it enterprise transition.

Platform as a service

There are also several meetings devoted to PAAs (platform as a service). This form of cloud computing seems to be overlooked compared to the already widely adopted IaaS and SaaS, but the situation is changing rapidly. The Hyperstratus consultancy concludes that the PAAs format will eventually be used by mainstream IT companies to implement flexible applications. This is because most enterprise developers find it difficult to design an application that wants to interact directly with the resources of the underlying infrastructure. Leveraging the PAAs framework will allow enterprise developers to automate the scalability and resiliency of cloud computing while focusing on business logic.

APIs in cloud computing

At the API Symposium on the role of cloud computing, I gained special access to the ahref= "http://event.gigaom.com/structure/schedule/" target= "_new" >. It can be invoked by an application to invoke external services and have an impact. First, it provides a way to increase developer productivity by reducing the development of applications. If an external service can provide a feature or dataset, developers can develop fewer applications, free from the complexity of the areas of application that are not standard, and then work on standardizing services. In other words, developers can focus on the application, which is why it will bring new life to the business value of the enterprise.

Second, the API will provide a new revenue approach to the enterprise by providing a system interface that allows unrelated Web applications to be transformed without even realizing the end user. Sears cites an example of this: by providing an API, retailers can allow external Web sites to sell goods, expand the retailer's clientele, and perhaps provide new sources of revenue for retailers. To provide a common API for how to invoke an application's scenario, in another presentation from Salesforce, it demonstrates 5 billion page views per day of the site, of which 50% is fully available through the Salesforce API.

Third, the API will bring changes to the architecture of the application. The application's code will no longer have to be written by a single enterprise organization, and replaced by an enterprise code mix and external services that can meet the challenges of error tracking, technical support, performance testing, and so on. As one participant pointed out during the meeting, applications are only the weakest link in external services.

I have to compare the themes of these two meetings. While the use of cloud computing in business shows a positive attitude towards the adoption of cloud computing by end-users, it also shows that "official" adoption of cloud services has just taken the first step. At the same time, company representatives involved in the STRUCTURE2011 conference are busy dismantling existing application design patterns and replacing them with radically different approaches to rebuilding, implementing, and managing applications. This allows us to feel that the IT industry is experiencing a destructive phenomenon, and as a separate application, the decision by the enterprise to approve the outsourcing service will have a long-term impact on the remaining staff. I firmly believe that we are experiencing more changes than we have seen in the past, and those of us who are engaged in it will be privileged to experience this change and stand on the cusp of this change.
