The latest official Alliance Open Cloud Consortium (OCC), a cloud-setting standard, was announced, so that each cloud would no longer be a separate cloud, but would interoperate with one another.

OCC's membership includes a number of universities that are committed to increasing the ability to store and compute cloud performance in geographically independent data centers, and to strengthen open architecture to enable computing clouds to interoperate seamlessly across the entity's network.

Cloud computing is probably one of the hottest words in the IT industry, and its hype may sometimes obscure some of the technical problems of cloud computing, which the OCC mentions.

"There's so much discussion about cloud computing and sometimes it's hard to discuss technical details," said Robert Grossman, director of the Senior Computing Laboratory at the University of Illinois. ”

For example, if you are running applications through a cloud service provider, such as Aamzon's EC2 service, now you want to switch to another vendor. "Our goal is that you don't need to rewrite your application when you change cloud service providers." Grossman said.

OCC hopes to provide support for open source software configuration for cloud-based technologies and to develop interoperability standards and interfaces between different types of cloud-enabled software.

The cost of the OCC organization includes the University of Illinois, Northwestern University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Chicago and the California Institute of Communications and Information technology. Cisco is the first it vendor to publicly join the organization, and more vendors are expected to join in the future.

The main infrastructure of OCC is the open Cloud testbed, a test platform of two Chicago-built racks, one at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the other at the California Institute of Communications and Information technology, and both connected to 10Gb Ethernet.

Grossman and colleagues recently used this test platform to measure the performance loss of running calculations in a wide area network. Grossman said that by using sector _and Sphere (an Open-source software developed by National Center for Data mining to store and compute clouds), they were able to increase data transfer speeds to twice times that of Hadoop.

One of the reasons for the speed increase is the use of UDT protocol, which is mainly designed for very high-speed networks and large datasets.

OCC has been forming gradually since 2008, and is only in its infancy. Grossman said the organization, like VMware and other vendors, is focusing on the same technical issues (VMware is now developing an operating system that can handle the entire datacenter).

The main purpose of the organization is to allow university institutions and it vendors to share technical information in a competitive way, making cloud computing faster, more secure, and based on open source standards and open source software.

"I'm not a salesman, it's really important to solve interoperability issues and it's not clear at this point," Grossman said. ”

Grossman wants more mainstream it vendors to join the organization. "At the moment we have to gather a lot of vendors to share information," he said. ”
