The revised "Send Mail" script step dialog box now supports sending mail directly via SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a set of guidelines for sending and receiving email).
If you choose to send mail through an "email client", the behavior is the same as in previous versions. However, if you choose to send via "SMTP Server" in the drop-down menu, you can specify the SMTP server settings in the pop-up "SMTP Options" dialog box. At the same time, if you choose to send via "SMTP Server" from the drop-down menu, a "Specify" button will appear next to the drop-down menu, allowing you to re-enter the SMTP options dialog box.
To send email through SMTP, you must provide information about the sender and SMTP
server in the SMTP Options dialog box. This dialog box appears every time you select "SMTP Server" in the "Send Mail" dialog box or click "Specify" (when "SMTP Server" is selected). Whenever you send an email via SMTP, FileMaker Pro will use this information. There is no need to enter every time you send an email.
Enter or edit SMTP options:
1. Display the "Send Mail" dialog box by performing the following operations.
• Choose File menu> Send Mail.
• To create a script for sending emails, select the Script menu> Manage Script. Click New in the Manage Script dialog box. In the Edit Script dialog box, select Other for viewing, double-click the sent message in the list, and then click Specify.
2. In the "Send Mail" dialog box:
• When entering the SMTP option for the first time, select the SMTP server for the sending method
• To edit SMTP options (SMTP
server selected), click Specify
3. In the SMTP Options dialog box, enter user information and SMTP server information.
Note To specify a calculation that generates the contents of the field, click Specify next to the field, create a calculation, and then click OK.
Options and operation methods:
Name
Enter the name of the email sender (for example, your name). This name will appear in the "From" field of the outgoing message.
Email address
Enter the email address used to send the outgoing mail (for example, Me@MyCompany.com).
Reply address
Enter the email address used to receive reply messages. This address can be different from the sending address (for example: You@MyCompany.com). If no reply address is entered, the system will send the reply to the sender address.
Outgoing SMTP server
Enter the SMTP server name used to send the email.
Server port
Keep the default value of 25, or enter another value (such as X.400) to specify the port number to connect to the SMTP server.
Use the encrypted socket protocol layer (SSL)
Select this option if email requires a secure connection, or clear this option if a secure connection is not required.
Identification
Keep the default value of "None" (you can log in to the SMTP server without authentication), or select "Plain Text Password" (for cases without password encryption) or "Cram MD5" (for cases with password encryption).
username
(It can be used when selecting "plain text password" or "Cram MD5" authentication.) Enter the user ID to authenticate the user on the SMTP server. The user must enter the correct username and password to send mail on this server.
Password
(It can be used when selecting "plain text password" or "Cram MD5" authentication.) Enter the password to authenticate the user on the SMTP server. The user must enter the correct username and password to send mail on this server.
4. Click OK
You will then return to the "Send Mail" dialog box where you can continue to set email options.
Note: FileMaker
Server 10 supports the use of "Instant Web Publishing" and "Custom Web Publishing" to send mail through an SMTP server. Sending emails via email clients is not supported.
