Does cloud computing make it possible for companies to migrate to the cloud?

Compilation (/desire): The latest survey of the Carbon Disclosure Project (Carbon Disclosure Project, or CDP) once again confirms that cloud computing helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The report says U.S. companies migrating to the cloud can reduce their emissions by 85.7 million tonnes a year, the equivalent of 200 million barrels of oil.

Interestingly, many of the companies involved in the study said that environmental protection was not the main motivation for them to migrate to the cloud, as I had expected. Citigroup Paul Stemmler has said that "reducing carbon emissions is only one factor in migrating to the cloud, but it is not a major factor, and the main factor is future market trends." ”

Most of the motivations for current enterprise migrations to cloud computing environments revolve around cost savings and hype. Green computing is actually a by-product, not a direct production goal. I even suspect that even if it proves that cloud computing will increase CO2 emissions, companies will be forced to migrate to the public cloud by demand.

This is not to say that companies are greedy and do not care about the environment, they only put the development prospects and shareholder equity in the first place, which means that enterprises will use the most effective and cost-effective computing resources. If these resources are "green" to the environment, it is a matter of both worlds. But whether cloud computing is "green" is not the focus of business.

In short, cloud computing is a good thing to do to help businesses save money and improve operational efficiencies while also reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.
