KeywordsCloud storage cloud backup
As cloud computing becomes more widely available in all fields and as data grows and costs associated with it rise, so are storage infrastructures that allow subscribers and providers to host their services over the network . This means that cloud storage resources are frequently combined with near-line backup technologies available on internal systems to provide remote backups for long-term archiving and their remote backups can be used as a copy at the time of a disaster. As a result, some vendors are struggling with bandwidth issues and optimizing cloud backup storage to ensure that the services they deliver meet the needs of users and are financially viable .
Interested in cloud storage
ESG surveyed 611 IT professionals in North and Western Europe, evaluating, sourcing and operating enterprise IT and data centers and found that 61% of professionals are interested in or are using Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). In IaaS mode, the device is owned by the service provider and the service provider is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the device. After subscribing to the service, the user pays the corresponding fee for each usage. All users use a shared virtual resource pool, and the service provider promises that the virtual resource pool is flexible enough to ensure that the storage space required for remote backup copies is available on demand. Users do not need to maintain secondary sites for remote disk or tape storage, so having the costs of owning and managing secondary site-related resources is reduced.
But backing up data to cloud storage and recovering data from cloud storage can be challenging because of the huge backup set. The amount of data that is backed up daily is larger than the available bandwidth, and the time required to complete the transfer of backup data is longer than the available time. IT organizations often have to trade off the need to purchase more bandwidth at a higher cost and extend the backup window or recovery time.
Optimize backup bandwidth
But there are alternatives to solve these problems. Products from vendors such as NetEnrich, Pancetera Software and Riverbed Technology employ bandwidth optimization technologies that make hybrid backup configurations that combine near-line backup with cloud storage services.
NetEnrich saw an opportunity to provide EMC Data Domain users with virtual storage in the cloud. Users use the existing nearline backup software and EMC Data Domain equipment to protect data locally. For remote backups in the cloud, backup data stored on the local EMC Data Domain appliance is replicated over the Internet remotely to NetEnrich's data recovery repository. Data Recovery Repository EMC Data Domain deduplication appliance based on NetEnrich data center. Data Domain deduplication and compression technologies radically reduce the bandwidth required for remote replication of backup copies.
Virtual Appliance Pancetera Unite radically reduces the I / O and bandwidth footprint when backing up and replicating WMware virtual machine environments. Pancetera's SmartRead and SmartMotion technologies optimize the process of capturing and migrating virtual machines to the cloud. Integrating solutions and backup solutions makes it possible to optimize without disrupting existing production environments: i365 and Pancetera partnered to embed Pancetera Unite virtual backup appliances in i365's EVault data protection products, and VMware backups can be launched by EVault and products Consolidation reduces the overhead associated with VMware backups and optimizes data migration across LANs or WANs. Pancetera can integrate WAN acceleration technology to further accelerate data transfer.
Riverbed Whitewater Cloud Storage Accelerator leverages WAN optimization technology in existing Riverbed products to provide complete cloud-based data protection services. Device-based products seamlessly integrate with existing backup technologies and cloud storage provider APIs to provide fast data replication to the cloud for remote archiving. The Riverbed Whitewater appliance is installed on the network as a local destination for backup jobs that connect to the Internet and replicate the data to Amazon's S3 cloud storage. Deduplication and compression technologies are the cornerstones of all Riverbed products, optimized for wide area networks and accelerated data transfer, respectively.
Once you have a cloud storage service as a low-cost alternative to your maintenance infrastructure, you have the following significant benefits:
• Provides a more cost-effective strategy than your own secondary site for maintenance and management.
• Capital and operational costs, including the purchase and maintenance of hardware devices, data center footprint, and many environmental factors in the data center such as power and cooling, are eliminated
• Provided more predictable budget
• Facilitate disaster recovery via remote copy
Because bandwidth directly affects the effectiveness of hybrid backup configurations, it makes sense to explore bandwidth optimization techniques such as deduplication, compression, and WAN acceleration. Some of the latest solutions on LAN / WAN provide great efficiency for transferring backup copies of data centers to cloud storage. This is a key area for data storage administrators to focus on when considering hybrid cloud scenarios.
