SingTel, the largest telecoms company in South-East Asia, said the analysis and big data would be a "big role" for the company, especially for future development.

Bill Chang, chief executive of Singapore Telecom Group, said new business models would emerge, especially in the "smart city" of urbanisation, in the context of the need to improve the efficiency of things based on information and communications.

Chang points out that it will ensure their sustainability and efficiency for the growing population and the cities of the hyper-load system. There is a lot of data to be generated in these areas, as more and more intelligent machines need "conversations", sensing networks, mobile offices, and the use of social networks--which can be used to tap real-time insights.

"In the case of China's transportation, we need to know where the checkpoints are, when people travel, especially during the peak holiday season, and there will be a lot of people involved," he explained, adding that real-time information and analysis was necessary.

Chang also mentioned other areas that are about to contribute to big data growth, including the health care system, education, government and financial services.

He said Singapore Telecom would launch a cloud-based voice analysis service for the education sector, which would allow schools to conduct oral tests and immediately score students.

"Previously, 40 students had to queue up for a single exam, but now using our sound analysis software, they can take exams anywhere at any time." ”

He added that Singapore Telecom is exploring with research institutions how to improve their analytical skills. Singapore Telecom has been keen to acquire other companies this year, such as the US mobile advertising company Amobee and the restaurant review site Hungrygowhere.

Singapore Telecom's Cloud milestone

Singapore Telecom is transforming its core communications services, Chang said, and has established a development strategy for cloud services that is moving in the direction of all services (EaaS). "In the future, all services will be broken down into small portions for dynamic allocation and consumption." The days of high spending have gone away. ”

To this end, Singapore Telecom has launched a large number of ICT-targeted products for small and medium-sized enterprises, "to help them overcome these challenges."

Singapore Telecom has introduced a virtual market feature called Trading board, hosted on the MyBusiness online resource terminal, mainly for smaller companies, and also for the public at large. This platform allows small and medium sized businesses to buy services and products in bulk, set business goals or engage in job bidding.

He pointed out that there was also a government-funded, various agency-designed online library for small and medium-sized enterprises to access information that was helpful to them, which had always been a sore point for them.

Singapore Telecom hopes that by providing these services, non-customer visitors will eventually be able to take advantage of its services.

Coping with the Asian recession

Chang pointed out that the global recession has affected some companies ' it budgets, but in a prolonged downturn, Singapore Telecom's corporate product range should help it support the situation and offset potential losses in some other sectors.

Software as a service is an example that helps Singapore telecom overcome its 2008 financial crisis. Responding to a review of Australia and the United States about Huawei, China's telecoms equipment maker, Chang said customers were more concerned about whether Singapore Telecom would use Huawei's technical equipment in its cloud stacks.

He said: "For this, we do not use Huawei's equipment in the cloud stack, nor does it apply to any Chinese supplier's equipment, since the customer asked, we will answer frankly." Of course, this feedback will arouse our great attention. ”

However, according to Singapore Telecom, they used Huawei's equipment in other parts of their communications infrastructure. Singapore Telecom is transforming from a telecoms operator into a multimedia company.
