Open source cloud computing platform with bright future and tortuous road

With the construction of last year's OpenStack, Si jie cloudstack from OpenStack split out, and eucalyptus gradually be used by people, open source cloud computing market is entering the white-hot stage of development. But zenoss a new report says these open source platforms are still not enough.

The open source cloud computing market has warmed up since last year, but Zenoss, a new report from Cloud management, says that so far these open-source platforms have not been used much.

More than 600 members of the Zenoss Open source community surveyed, only 18% said they had deployed an open-source cloud management platform. The lack of support and security for open source platforms is the main reason.

OpenStack is the most deployed platform for users, with almost 50% per cent of the surveyed users. The project, supported by Rackspace, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, IBM, Cisco and other tech giants, has recently been criticized by Gartner. The project recently released its sixth edition of the OpenStack code.

Supported by Citrix, Cloudstack, managed by the Apache Software Foundation, is the second most popular open source platform, reaching a 19% adoption rate. The second is eucalyptus, whose share is less than 10%. Despite the low adoption rate, 43% of respondents said they were considering deploying an open-source cloud in the future.

The report found that VMware dominates the enterprise Virtual machine monitoring program, providing power to three-fourths of virtualized environments. About one-fifth of respondents said they used KVM, Microsoft Hyper-V and Xen to monitor the hypervisor. Only 16% said they used the platform as a service (PaaS), although 30% did not say they were interested. In contrast, another survey of more than 750 respondents recently found that 82% of users use software as a service (SaaS) application. Gartner has found that SaaS has so far developed into a 14 billion dollar industry, attracting most of the investment, the infrastructure as a service (IaaS) market of 6 billion U.S. dollars, PAAs market for 1.2 billion U.S. dollars.
