Public: The top three public cloud manufacturers

While private cloud is one of the fastest growing areas in the cloud where enterprise users are involved, the public cloud is becoming more and more powerful in the business world. Some companies just use the public cloud alone, while others combine public and private clouds to ease the threat of security and greatly reduce costs compared to real private clouds. The selection of three public clouds is outlined here, the three most commonly used among participants in the serverside.com 2011 readership survey.

Amazon Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2)

The "resilient" cloud has not lived up to its name, this year by expanding far beyond its biggest competitor (Google). Last year, the popularity of the two big industry giants was the same. Now, EC2 is a higher priority because there are 60% people in the respondents who technology it.

Amazon's cloud is effective, providing users with a higher level of control over what the installation is and how the application is deployed. With the development and deployment of Web applications, Amazon also supports more popular programming languages, including C # and. NET. And this cloud is also compatible with a wide range of operating systems-and provides users with a large number of control operating system support. Finally, business users can choose from an almost limitless selection, such as off-the-shelf platforms, frameworks, and server software such as MySQL, Apache, drupal, etc. to use the EC2 platform.

EC2 is currently geared toward large and medium-sized enterprises, but it also introduces open services such as micro-instances to small businesses. Of course, running only individual instances can pose a single point of failure. From an extended perspective, this represents a major problem. There is no completely free choice because Amazon relies on a fee-based service model, even at the micro level (unlike Google's revenue, which comes from ads placed on small business customers ' websites).

Google Application engine

Although the Google Application engine (GAE) has fallen to second place in the user race, it still has a sizeable 35% market share because of the public cloud business users. It is a popular choice for small businesses that want to try public cloud or no cost.

Gae offers a free quota (equal to nearly 5 million page views/month), which is very attractive to entrepreneurial businesses. In addition to "free", it is compatible with Linux OS (EC2 is only compatible with the Enterprise version of Linux, such as Oracle and Red Hat). Gae's Open source features and APIs make portability a key benefit for businesses that can transform servers. Some users also find it easier to expand in this environment.

That said, Gae is only designed for Java and Python programming languages. For any development team that uses Linux OS and uses Java to write Web applications, this is good for fast and easy deployment of Web applications. Even better for users who use the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) to develop applications. Otherwise, there's a lot to learn before companies start using Google Apps.

VMWare

VMware's cloud computing is catching up with industry leaders. It rose from 23% last year to 34% this year. The company has existed even more than its main competitor, but its cloud product is a new category of service product. VMware has so far focused most of its efforts on capturing enterprise-level users-and has been quite successful in this regard. By making the Vcloud API open source, VMware is taking steps to establish industry standards and ensure continued relevance in this rapidly expanding market. So far its strategy appears to be effective. Google is actually working with VMware to support Spring's Java applications on Gae. This means VMware users can deploy their vcloud or deploy them to the Google application engine. This interoperability and portability is expected to help two companies carve out a bigger share of the big pie in the public cloud.

From a end-user perspective, VMware can be compatible with a variety of OS versions, especially cent systems, and can be used with programming languages like Perl and SQL, both of which do not support Amazon's EC2. With this vendor, teams with very popular SpringSource development frameworks can easily be transformed into a public cloud environment. Other benefits offered by the service, compared to EC2, include durability, flexible configuration, cluster management for reliability and redundancy, and the ability to manage VM groups.
