Now that the news about cloud computing has captured the headlines of the major media, in this newly emerging field, all kinds of news is not uncommon, so how much is really important content? The following are some of the most recent events that have been compiled by the small, and believe they will have a long-term impact on cloud computing.

The appearance of the cloud operating system

On July 7, Google announced that it had officially launched its Chrome OS, while in the same week Microsoft unveiled details about the pricing and availability of Windows Azure cloud services. Chrome OS and Azure represent the industry's most authoritative new and best practices for building, running, and accessing applications from different computing terminals. The Chrome OS is dedicated to netbook and PC-side cloud operating systems, while Windows Azure is a cloud operating system developed specifically for data centers. Imagine that after November, developers could hire Windows Azure virtual machines at a very low price of 12 cents per hour or 2.88 dollars a day. Google's goal is to build a cloud operating system of client devices that can be launched in a matter of seconds, leveraging local processing power to enable rich Web applications. Both will be milestones in the history of the operating system.

Of course, the effort to cloud operating systems is not just Google and Microsoft. April VMware launched the global vsphere 4 o'clock, also declared that this is the industry's first "cloud operating system", but the industry has been questioned.

Towards standardization

As the 51CTO has repeatedly reported, there is a consensus in the industry that a lack of uniform standards will pose challenges to cloud computing development. Last week, representatives from major standards groups met in Washington to develop a strategy for collaboration on cloud computing technology to avoid fragmentation that would hinder development. Issues to be addressed by the newly established Cloud Standards Coordination Task Force (Cloud Standards Coordination sharable group) include security standards, the underlying architecture as a service interface, management framework, Data Interchange format, and cloud classification and reference models. This is not the first time the industry is going to be the only one. To address interoperability, its purpose is to try to reconcile the work of new and established standard-setting bodies, such as the Cloud Security Alliance (Cloud) and DTMF.

The emergence of a new tool for mixing clouds

BMC released two announcements on July 15 announcing the possibility of a hybrid cloud service that could cover enterprise data centers and public service providers--and it has come out of the conceptual phase. The BMC has deep experience in data center automation operations and has moved into private cloud direction in IT service management and service automation. With Amazon's protocol, the BMC already allows IT departments to create self-service portals where in-house developers and business units can demand for virtualized IT resources, their own data centers, or Amazon's flexible computing Cloud (elastic Compute cloud,ec2) resources. EC2 Resources (whether existing Amazon Machine images or custom content) can be configured and ready within minutes.

The rise of the API

Rackspace, the early leader of the cloud services market, revealed that its cloud Servers api, rackspace API enabled developers to insert Rackspace cloud services, such as starting and controlling servers, creating custom software stacks, Tasks such as restarting the server and inserting files into the file system. The Cloud API simplifies inherently complex processes, accelerates the development of new services and new features, and accelerates the flow through processes. They also make it easier to create mixed clouds by providing interfaces between enterprise data centers and public cloud services. Rackspace plans to use its API as an open source project, and many in the industry want to see Amazon open the AWS API in the same way, looking at the Rackspace Cloud Servers API as a guide for the future.

Exposure to cloud computing weaknesses

Despite these advances, recent events have once again proved that cloud computing may be unreliable and insecure. Before 51cto.com released the "Into the cloud you have to know eight attention," the article, listed in the first is security. Amazon's EC2 was interrupted for several hours in June because some servers were disconnected because of lightning strikes. Rackspace's recent two data centers have been disrupted for several days, leading to a fall in the company's share price. In addition, Twitter has been frequently hacked by hackers, and some suspect that a cloud-based Yahoo and Google Apps account has caused sensitive internal disclosure. These failures and leaks remind us that despite all the signs that cloud computing is striding forward, it is still risky and we need to be cautious.
