VMware helps NSOs consolidate data centers, simplify management

VMware's VMware, ESX server, and VirtualCenter help China's National Bureau of Statistics migrate applications on multiple old servers to new servers, reducing the number of server deployments, and thus simplifying data center management. Thereby alleviating the data Center administrator of the National Statistical Office in the management of work pressure.

The National Bureau of Statistics plans to migrate data centers, need to consolidate servers, and reduce the complexity of administrator work the national Statistical Office, as the immediate institution of the State Council, is responsible for statistics and national accounts. The National Bureau of Statistics Computing Center needs to provide IT infrastructure services to multiple business units of the Bureau of Statistics, and until the virtualization technology is deployed, they need to manage more than 240 x86 servers and more than 30 small machines, but the formal staffing is only 4 people, facing very high management challenges. At the same time, many servers have been deployed, due to a variety of historical reasons, the utilization rate is extremely low, most of the average utilization rate of 5%, does not meet the needs of the economy society. At the same time, the NBS is planning to migrate the old data centers and create a disaster preparedness center to improve data security in the data center:

The National Bureau of Statistics must consolidate applications on multiple servers in order to reduce the complexity of management and reduce the workload of management personnel while increasing server utilization.

Because of business requirements, they need to create isolated system environments for each application instead of creating multiple applications within a single system;

To migrate applications in old data centers, the National Bureau of Statistics needs to migrate them to virtual machines through the VMware tools to achieve integration while migrating;

The National Bureau of Statistics needs to promote standardized application management in order to standardize and unify the National Statistical Bureau and the application system of national statistical offices.

The National Bureau of Statistics needs to deploy applications that do not have high demand for IT resources on virtual machines to enable more flexible and easy management.

VMware ESX Server helps ONS consolidate servers

In the computer room of the National Bureau of Statistics, more than 240 x86 servers and more than 30 small machines are running. Some x86 servers are owned by different business units, hosted in the computing Center, and some x86 servers are provided by the computing Center to other business units as it infrastructures. The National Bureau of Statistics has carried out a three-step strategy to progressively integrate servers in the computer room of the computing center.

First, in order to promote a unified statistical application, virtualization was deployed on two intel-based four-Xeon processors, 6 applications were installed, tested and well run, according to technical staff of the National Bureau of Statistics, the model of the 2 physical machines running multiple virtual machines will be extended to provincial and municipal statistical offices; Then they provided more than 20 virtual machine services through 4 four core Xeon servers, and ran business systems for the business unit. Third, through the VMware tool, they migrated more than 30 applications from the old data center to the virtual machines on more than 10 physical machines:

After virtualization, the utilization of the server is significantly increased, and the physical servers required to deploy the application are drastically reduced, and the saved servers and data center space can be deployed to new applications;

The previous application of reliability and security is not very high, through the deployment of virtualization and application run on the virtual machine, the National Bureau of Statistics at the same time retain the original physical server applications to achieve parallel operation;

Because the virtual machine can be quickly deployed and replicated, through the application of virtual machine deployment, so that the National Bureau of Statistics can quickly spread to the provincial and municipal statistical offices of fully tested applications, after the formal launch of the project, will significantly reduce the application of time, but also reduce the provincial and municipal departments of technical application difficulty

As multiple physical servers are integrated, the National Bureau of Statistics will be able to effectively reduce the amount of work required for server maintenance management, thereby reducing the pressure on existing computing centers.

With virtualization technology, ESX Server helps the National Bureau of Statistics simplify the management of the computing center because only a very limited number of people, but to manage a lot of servers, the National Bureau of Statistics in the management of the computing center is facing considerable pressure. At the same time, the existing server deployment, the lack of back-end storage systems, each server to store data on the random hard disk, but also make the security of the data is not the most reliable guarantee. Because most servers are divided into different business units, there is not enough economic budget to have a SAN or NAS storage solution for each server.

In addition, the newly created data center also wants to make better use of the space in the data center, so as to better enhance the need for ROI and allow more space for expansion. So the National Bureau of Statistics needs to integrate the existing servers, starting with the servers that belong to the computing center, and integrating their applications through virtualization to improve server utilization while reducing management complexity. Because the National Bureau of Statistics is relatively familiar with VMware's virtualization technology, they decide to use the ESX server for server virtualization. Multiple applications, including Exchange Server, business application, and enterprise internal Instant Messaging servers, are deployed through multiple Intel four core Xeon Processor-based four-way servers and four-core Xeon Processor-based servers, and the use of VMware tools to successively 30 Applications on multiple physical machines migrated over more than 10 physical machines.

With the three-stage virtualization effort described above, the National Bureau of Statistics's deployment of virtualized servers has increased the utilization rate to around 80%, while the business sector has little sense of change and has not experienced any problems since June 2007. At the same time, through the virtual Center management system, the staff of the NBS Computing Center can manage the existing virtual machines well, and because the number of physical machines has been reduced, their workload has been reduced, and more innovative work can be done.

After a period of use, it can be said that the national statistical Office has enjoyed the advantages of multiple virtualization. Next, they plan to persuade more business units to adopt virtualization and centralize the purchase of storage devices, leveraging advanced features such as high availability, migration, and so on in VMware ESX server by making existing servers into server Farms and then deploying storage back-end. To better enhance the security and reliability of data in the data center.

As a result, the National Bureau of Statistics, by deploying VMware ESX Server Virtualization technology, effectively consolidates the number of servers, reduces the workload of managers, and enables flexible management of servers. "We feel that the biggest benefit is consolidating servers, simplifying management, and configuring more flexibility," says Yu, a computing center engineer at the National Bureau of Statistics. ”
