Gibu Thomas, head of global mobility at Wal-Mart, said on Wednesday CTIA Wireless Keynote that the world's largest retailer will use big data to improve consumer in-store shopping as mobile-related purchases overtake e-commerce Experience. He also cited the results of several independent market research in the United States, the results show that by 2016 mobile-related in-store purchases will reach 2 times the electricity sales.
"The future of the retail industry will be about competing to enhance each consumer's personalized experience, all of which will happen to the tiny screens in their hands," concludes Thomas.
Nearly a third of Walmart.com's traffic now comes from the mobile side, which jumped 40% during the holiday last year. Its handset app is also stimulating consumer purchases: app-enabled users visit Wal-Mart on a much higher frequency and spend 40% more time in the supermarket than regular customers. Most of Wal-Mart's customers have a smart phone.
Their app now has the function of a shopping list, can tell customers where they want the goods, and also issues electronic coupons for similar products. Wal-Mart is still testing a "Scan and Go" system: Users simply pay for the phone by scanning the phone one by one and scanning the phone at the checkout counter. No longer have to queue for a long time.
And now through the analysis of the user's past purchase data, they hope to automatically generate the user's shopping list after the user opens the app to predict the goods they want to buy.
"The perfect shopping list is that you do not have to go at all, and you're there as long as you open it, and that's what we want," Thomas said.
