Domino Internet Mail

Mail Handling Overview
We usually use Domino as an internal email server for office applications. With the development of the network, users often connect to the network through leased lines or ISDN. In this case, the user usually asks: "Can I process the internet in the office system ?". (Of course you can !)
In r4.x, Domino generally uses smtp mta to forward Internet mail. In R5, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP have become standard tasks like router and can be loaded at any time. With support for these Internet mail protocols, the Domino server can be used not only as a Notes mail server, but also as an Internet mail server. Of course, in the mail processing process, Domino is the best choice, whether it is the notes RTF format or the Internet MIME format. As a result, prawns and cainiao don't have to worry about a bunch of garbled code from their boss.
Generally, a user has an email file on our email server (the same as an internal user in the office system ). You can access our server over the Internet by using mail clients that support SMTP, Pop, IMAP, and other protocols (such as Foxmail, notes, and outlook. Then, our server will verify the user name and password. Next, for the SMTP protocol, the server receives the user's mail file, saves it in mail. Box, and forwards it to the user. If the protocol is pop or IMAP, the user reads the new mail from the mail file and sends it to the user.

Email processing and network Domain Name Service
When you need to use the Domino server to process Internet mail, you must use the network Domain Name Service (DNS ). Obviously, if our server needs to send an email to 263.net, it must know how to access the 263.net email server. In this case, we need to query the IP address from the DNS server. If you want to receive emails, you must be able to access our server, such as mail.hereinfo.com or 210.76.112.164.
Specifically, the server must have a fixed IP address and the domain name must be correctly interpreted. For the POP service, you must add an MX record to our DNS server. Specific configuration solutions will be provided in the practical section.

SMTP routing Overview
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a point-to-point mail protocol. When a user sends a message through the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP:
1. The sending server checks the recipient's address (in the format of localpart @ domain) and searches for the network domain in the network Domain Name Service (DNS.
2. The network Domain Name Service (DNS) returns the IP address of the server in the network domain. The network domain receives emails through the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP.
3. The sending server connects to the target server through TCP/IP, establishes a simple SMTP connection, transmits messages, and closes the connection.

POP service Overview
POP service is the Protocol we use when we use outlook to receive emails (don't tell Sugar, you don't know ). You can set up Domino to support the POP3 mail protocol.
For POP users, they must first have a "personal" document in the domino address book. In addition, the user must have a mail file (at least let the Domino server know how to read the user's mail file) stored on the Domino server. Domino must verify POP3 users before accessing their emails, including basic name/password verification, Secure Socket Layer SSL authentication, and SSL encryption.
Pop users can also send emails to other POP users or IMAP users, but the SMTP protocol must be configured for users.

The IMAP service is similar to the POP service.

SuccessorArticleIntroduction
In the following practical articles, we will use cases to introduce how to configure the mail service for Domino! :-)

in the previous Domino Internet Mail theory, we described the theoretical basis for Using Domino for Internet mail services. Includes the mail protocols supported by Domino, descriptions of SMTP, Pop, IMAP, and other protocols. Next, we usually use a case to describe how to configure Domino for Internet mail service.
case overview
assume that a company named abc.com needs to use Domino for Internet mail services. The company has another domain name: abc.com.cn. Customers want to send and receive emails in the future for xxx@abc.com or xxx@abc.com.cn.
the customer has two domain names: abc.com and abc.com.cn. The customer has a fixed IP address 210.72.1120.5, which is the IP address they are going to use for the mail service. The host name of the mail server is mail, and the notes name is mail/abc.com. In addition, the customer usually directly accesses the Internet through optical fiber cables and has an independent internal DNS server. Now, we must assume that the network is in good condition, and that the dial-up users usually ping the IP address of the usual email server. In addition, we assume that Domino R5 and later versions have been installed on the mail server, and basic server configurations have been completed.

basic configuration
in the basic configuration section, you must complete DNS configuration, message processing configuration, and network domain configuration.
1) DNS configuration. We first add a region in DNS. The region name is written to abc.com (you will not go ). Add a record named a and enter mail in the host name. The domain is abc.com, And the IP address is 210.72.1120.5. Add an MX record and enter the Mail name. (Abc.com.cn is similar ).
2) Message Processing settings. Open administrator clients, go to "configuration"-"Message Processing Settings"-"configuration", and click "add configuration" to add a configuration for your server. Add the following items: "Basic-group or server name" write "mail/abc.com"; "router/SMTP-Basic-SMTP used to send messages outside the local Internet domain: "select" yes ". In the operation bar, select Save and exit ".
3) network domain settings. Open administrator clients. Go to "configuration"-"Message Processing Settings"-"network domain", and click "add network domain" to add a network domain to the mail server. Add the following items: "Basic-network domain type" select "global network domain"; "Basic-global network domain name" Write abc.com (can be arbitrarily written ); "Basic-global network role" fill in "R5 Internet network domain or r4.x smtp mta"; "conversion-SMTP address conversion-local main Internet network domain" write "abc.com "; "" conversion-SMTP address conversion-equivalent Internet Domain alias "fill in" abc.com.cn ". Select "Save and quit" in the Public operation bar ".

Client Configuration
Restart the server to ensure that the SMTP and pop tasks are loaded on the server. In the server documentation, change "SMTP listener task" to "enable ". Then register a new user named "ABC" on the server, the user's Internet address name should be either a abc@abc.com or a abc@abc.com.cn, and set an internet password for the user.
Notes client segment Configuration:
A. SMTP configuration. In "Personal Address Book", select "Settings ". Select "add account" and enter the following domains: "account name" write "abc smtp" (optional); "account server name" write "mail.abc.com" (or server IP ); "Login Name" write "ABC"; "password" write the user's Internet password; "protocol" select "SMTP ". Select "Save and quit" from the Operation bar ".
B. Pop configuration. In the personal address book, select Settings ". Select Add account ". Fill in the following fields: "account name" write "ABC pop" (optional); "account server name" write "mail.abc.com" (or server IP); "Login Name" write "ABC "; "password": enter your internet password. "protocol": Select "pop ". Select "Save and quit" from the Operation bar ".
The method for configuring the Outlook client is the same as that for configuring a free mailbox such as 263.net.

Advanced Configuration
Using Domino for Internet mail services, there are some other advanced configurations, such as: If you only need to send the SMTP function in the mail routing, use SSL to authenticate users, and restrict business mail; restrict users that allow external mail. In fact, as long as it is something you can think of, Domino basically provides
