Exploring the potential of mobile hard drives

Many of my friends use mobile hard disks, but poor availability may cause some trouble. For example, if there are too many files to be backed up, it is difficult to find them. Backup is intended to protect important files. removable hard disks often work between different computers and are prone to viruses or leaks (loss is also the source of leaks ). In addition, does a mobile hard disk only support file backup?

In this article, we will solve the two problems mentioned above. We also need to build a mobile hard disk as a tool disk for system installation and maintenance. Experiment environment: Windows XP SP3, Samsung GB mobile hard drive. For other environments, see run.

Partitioning a mobile hard disk is the basis for solving the above problem. This article takes a GB mobile hard disk as an example. I divide the data according to the following table.

We recommend that you select NTFS for partition file systems. In this way, you can set permissions for files or manage partitions in quotas. These are conducive to protecting files from being modified or leaked, so as to avoid viruses to some extent. In addition, if FAT32 is selected, you cannot store large files larger than 4 GB, such as HD movies. This must be something you don't want to see.

The following describes how to partition a mobile hard disk in the Windows XP system window.
Step 2: Right-click my computer and select Manage ". Then, double-click "disk management" in the window that opens. After the operation is successful, you can find the mobile hard disk that has been inserted into your computer on the right.

Step 2: Create a primary partition. Right-click "move hard disk" and select "create disk partition". The partition wizard runs automatically, select "primary disk partition" in sequence → enter 10000 (default unit: MB, 10000 MB = 10 GB) for the size of the required partition) → select the NTFS file system and select "execute quick formatting ". After that, a 10 Gb primary hard disk partition can be created successfully. This partition is used to store system installation files or Windows PE (pre-installation environment ).

Step 2: Create an extended partition. Right-click the remaining disk space, select "new disk partition", and then select "logical partition. Note that, according to the planning requirements of the following table, you should enter the partition size in the Wizard to maintain the default value, that is, the maximum value of the remaining space, in this way, all the remaining space of the mobile hard disk can be divided into logical partitions.

Step 2: Create a logical partition. Right-click the created extended partition and select "new disk partition". Subsequent operations are similar to Step 1. You should select "logical partition" and enter the size of the logical partition, for example, 200000 (MB) can be used to create a GB logical partition.

Similarly, create 2nd logical partitions. When the input partition size is large, keep the default value as the maximum value of the remaining space.

Tip: file management is classified. One of the measures is to store files by partition, and the other is to store files by folder. In addition, you can manage files by time, file type, or author.

Dual encryption and Privacy Protection
According to the above plan, we need to set up a space to store our private files, which will act as the second partition of the mobile hard disk. To protect private files, the tool software TrueCrypt is used to encrypt the partition. If there is no password, the encrypted partition will be in a non-open state, which not only ensures the privacy of the file, but also ensures that the virus cannot intrude, to a certain extent, prevent the partition from being incorrectly formatted.

Software preparation
TrueCrypt is one of the world's most famous and authoritative hard disk encryption software, so far there is no way to crack its encrypted disk. It has three encryption algorithms: AES-256, Blowfish (448-bitkey), CAST5, Serpent, and Triple DES. Supports long passwords. If the length is 20 characters, it takes 1056993066125 years for brute force cracking! There are three encryption methods: virtualize the file into a partition to encrypt the partition and the entire hard disk, and encrypt the operating system. This article selects partition encryption.

Run the downloaded TrueCrypt Setup 6.2a.exe, and select "Install" and "Extract" to decompress it ). To copy it to a mobile hard disk, select Extract. Next, extract the Chinese patch and copy it to the extract directory of TrueCrypt. Then run TrueCrypt in the decompressed directory, click "Language" under "Settings" on the main interface of the program, and then select Simplified Chinese to enable the whole program to have a culture.

Double Encryption
Dual-encryption, in fact, is a good understanding, that is, first encrypt the partition (outer layer), and then encrypt part of the storage space in the encrypted partition (inner layer, the standard title in the Wizard is "Hide volume "). It is reported that the original intention of this function is: when the security of life is threatened and the password has to be disclosed, the second layer of encryption can be denied, because on the surface, you cannot determine whether Layer 2 encryption is performed.
The encryption method is not difficult. The encryption Wizard will guide us to encrypt the first and second layers in one go.

Step 2: Start the wizard. Run TrueCrypt and click "create encrypted volume" on the main interface to start the wizard.

Step 2: select a device. Select "encrypt non-system partition/device> hidden TrueCrypt encrypted volume> general mode". Click "select device" to select 2nd partitions of the mobile hard disk, as shown in figure 2. Obviously, it identifies partitions in the form of drive letters (such as K disks and I) and DeviceHarddisk XPartition X. Even if the drive letter is hidden, you can also select the partition to be encrypted in another way. We will use this feature in the "encryption technique" section below. In this example, DeviceHarddisk 2 Partition 2 indicates the first Partition of the mobile hard disk.

Step 2: outer encryption. Next, click "Next" to perform outer encryption. Select the default item and enter the password as prompted until the wizard completes the "outer encryption volume content" step.

During this process, the selected partition will be formatted. If you select the FTA file system, you can provide more space for the inner layer encryption. According to my actual situation, the selected encrypted partition capacity has reached 200 GB, and I chose NTFS. In this way, you can also enjoy the NTFS security features provided by the Windows system for this partition, such as EFS.

Step 2: the internal layer is encrypted (the standard title in the Wizard is "Hide encryption ). Click "Next". The Wizard will go to the "Hide encrypted volume" step, or click "Next. Note that it is not recommended that the password be the same as the outer password entered earlier. The size of the hidden volume should be slightly less than half the size of the outer volume, and the NTFS format is preferred.

Use encrypted volume
Previously, we created a two-layer encrypted volume. The outer encryption corresponds to 2nd partitions of the mobile hard disk, with a capacity of 200 GB. The inner encryption corresponds to a part of the space in the partition, capacity close to 100 GB. We can use different passwords to load them separately. The following are the specific methods:

Use encrypted outer volume
Step 2: Run TrueCrypt and click "select device". In the displayed dialog box, select the 1st partitions of the mobile hard disk to import it.

Step 2: select a new partition drive letter, such as Z, click load, and enter the password of the outer volume as prompted, as shown in 3.

After that, you can see a partition Z under "my computer" with a capacity of 200 GB. At this point, we can use it like a common disk partition, including formatting, write and read files.

Note that the partition encrypted by the outer layer has three states:
First, when it is not encrypted, you can certainly observe it under "my computer", assuming its drive letter is I.
Second, after the outer encryption, but not yet loaded, you can still observe the I disk, but it cannot be used. When you double-click it to open it, you will be prompted to format it. If formatted, both layers of encryption are completely invalid.
Third, after loading, you can still observe the I disk, but cannot open it. Right-click and select "format". The format cannot be performed. Because, at this time it has appeared as the Z disk, Z disk can be used normally.

Load inner volume
The method is similar. You only need to enter the internal volume password, and then you can view the loaded partition under my computer. As set in this article, the partition capacity after the inner encrypted volume is close to 100 GB.
