To plug system vulnerabilities in a short period of time, Microsoft also publishes updates that are not issued regularly, such as 6 Windows XP updates released in June, in addition to the upgrade package named Service Pack. To improve installation efficiency or to meet the special needs of some users, Microsoft has designed some installation parameters for the update program. The following is an example of a Windows XP update that describes its installation parameters and usage.

installation parameters for the update program

The Windows XP update installation parameters are grouped into the three categories listed in the following table, with the addition of a parameter "/L" that lists the installed updates, and an update to extract the parameter "-X". The following three tables list the installation parameters and their uses:

In addition to using parameters in the way listed above, updates allow users to use parameters in a simplified manner. For example,/F: Force other applications to shut down at shutdown,/n: Discard files required by the backup uninstall update,/z: Do not restart the system after the update installation completes,/Q: Install the update in quiet mode,/u: Install the update using unattended mode, and so on.

   Update program parameter usage tips

According to the specific circumstances of the use of the parameters of the update, you can meet some of the special requirements of the installation process, here are a few specific examples:

   1. Extract the update

Suppose that the name of a Windows XP update is WINDOWSXP-KB896428-X86-CHS, and if you need to decompress it and then install it, you can open the Windows XP Command Prompt window, switch to the location where the update is stored, and then, after the prompt, enter the Windowsxp-kb896428-x86-chs-x ". Click the browse button in the pop-up box to select a good file location, "OK" to display the "Extracting Files" dialog box, and then release all files in the update to the specified location.

In addition to using the Command Prompt window, you can open the Windows XP Run dialog box, where you enter "E:\bd\WindowsXP-KB896428-x86-CHS-x" (E:\bd is the folder where the updates are stored), "OK" The update can also be decompressed to the specified location.

   2. List Update Catalogs

It is necessary to know how many "patches" the system is playing before installing the update, and using the/L parameter can help us understand the updates that have been installed. All we have to do is select an update, and then execute it in the Command Prompt window or the Run dialog box as described in the above method with the/L parameter to see the system installation updates as shown in the dialog box. Note that you can only list updates that are installed after the latest version of the Service pack upgrade package and do not include updates in the service pack.

Tip: To get a printable update directory, you can open a command prompt window and enter the "SystemInfo > Systeminfo.txt" carriage return. In the current directory can be generated a file named Systeminfo.txt, which can not only see the system installed update information, but also records the other system main configuration information.

   3. Bulk-Install an update

If the user downloads more updates, manually install not only need to run one by one, but also to answer whether to restart the problem, for more than one computer installation update appears very cumbersome. You can then make a script (or "batch") file that installs all the updates at once. First copy the update you want to install to a folder (for example, E:\hotfix), and then type the contents of the script file into Notepad in the following format.

@echo off

Setlocal

Set Pathtofixes=e:\hotfix

%pathtofixes%\windowsxp-kb890859-x86-chs/z

%pathtofixes%\windowsxp-kb890923-x86-chs/z

%pathtofixes%\windowsxp-kb893066-x86-chs/z

The "E:\hotfix" in the file should be modified according to the location of the update, with each additional (or reduced) update in the "E:\hotfix" folder, such as "%pathtofixes%\windowsxp-kb890859-x86-chs/z" A statement like this will increase (or decrease) One and modify the name of the update in the statement (for example, "Windowsxp-kb890859-x86-chs") according to the name of the update program. If you need to use additional update parameters, simply add the required parameters to the script file after the name of the update, such as "%pathtofixes%\windowsxp-kb890923-x86-chs/z/q/forceappsclose".

After the script file is entered, click the Save As command under the Notepad File menu, enter a name save like bdaz.cmd (script filename "Bdaz" Any, extension must be. cmd or. bat). After the script file is saved, open the Command Prompt window, switch to the location where the script file "Bdaz.cmd" is stored, and enter "Bdaz" at the command prompt to begin the update of the bulk installation process.

Tip: After you use scripting to bulk install updates, you must restart the operating system for the updates that have already been installed to take effect. Because the update structure of Windows 2000/2003 is the same as Windows XP, the methods described in this article can also be used for Windows 2000/2003.
