Tips for configuring page files for Windows systems

In windowsxp, the paging file (Pagefile.sys) is a very important hidden file, especially when running some large programs such as 3D games, the paging file directly related to how quickly the program runs. But configuring the paging file is a headache.

By default, Windows stores the paging file in the system partition, and the default paging file size is 1.5 times times the system memory.

Many people know that to improve computer performance, you need to move the paging file to a different partition. When the paging file is in the system partition, Windows must perform disk read and write requests on both the system folder and the paging file. If you move the paging file to another partition, the competition between read and write requests is reduced. However, if the paging file is completely removed from the system partition, Windows will not be able to create a dump file (Memory.dmp), which is used to write debug information when a kernel-mode Stop error occurs, or the possible consequence is that the downtime may be prolonged.

The best way to do this is to create a paging file (slightly smaller), which is stored on the system partition by default, and then create a paging file (slightly larger) on another infrequently accessed partition-preferably without any data or operating system-specific files. When a paging file on an infrequently accessed partition is placed in its own partition, the paging file does not become fragmented, which can be considered another obvious advantage. If the paging file resides on a partition that contains additional data, it will be fragmented when it expands to meet the additional virtual memory required.

Non-fragmented paging files can make virtual memory access faster and more likely to capture dump files without significant errors. According to the design,

Windows takes precedence over paging files on partitions that are not frequently accessed, rather than paging files that are accessed on more system partitions. The system uses an internal algorithm to determine which paging file to use for virtual memory management.

Conclusion: The Memory.dmp file can be captured when a computer that is set up in the above method encounters a kernel-mode Stop error, and because the paging file is on a partition with the smallest number of accesses, the paging file on the infrequently accessed partition can be used most frequently.
