Asia Pacific's first deployment of next generation Education Cloud computing Center

Singapore Institute of Technology (Singapore Polytechnic) (SP) became the first educational institution in the Asia-Pacific region to arm students with the latest cloud computing technology by operating a data center environment, with the inauguration of the Singapore Institute of Technology's Power and Electronics Engineering Cloud Computing Center (SPE3C3).

SPE3C3 is the creative Power and Electronics Engineering Institute, which will provide on-demand, scalable virtual computing and storage services for faculty and students in the laboratory to support more complex projects and research work. The Singapore Institute of Technology will take advantage of cloud computing to achieve cost savings, energy efficiency and dynamic scalability.

SPE3C3 was developed by the Singapore Institute of Technology in collaboration with Cisco, Jie and NetApp, a leading manufacturer of IT industry. Although the resources are initially available only to students of the School of Electrical and Electronic engineering, they will be used in the near future for all the students, so long as the students are able to access the Internet, they can use SPE3C3 resources both inside and outside the school.

In the new school year beginning in April 2012, the third-year students of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the Singapore Institute of Technology are expected to look at two new electives----data center management and system virtualization, two new courses that will be spe3c3. These new courses are designed to educate and develop students ' ability to set up, manage and support data centers, virtualization technologies (including server, storage, and network virtualization), and data recovery.

SPE3C3 is built on the integrated cloud architecture of Cisco, Jie and NetApp. It is specially configured to support up to 31000 IOPs (input/output times per second), which is second to none in the education sector in Singapore. Another industry initiative of SPE3C3 is that it can support up to 400 virtual machines, and more importantly, it can turn on and off 240 server virtual machines in 6 minutes, 20 times times faster than industry standards.

During periods of low utilization, such as vacations, Singapore Polytechnic intends to use SPE3C3 to provide students with hands-on experience in managing and configuring virtualized data centers.

SPE3C3 establishes a network base for the next generation of unified structure data centers.
