Cloud networks are critical to application performance and access

Cloud computing-one of the hottest technologies now being touted-is so strongly sought after by the fact that its basic value comes from a flexible storage and server resource pool, which is the key to this pattern. Without the right network connection, both the server and the storage will not be able to operate to form the pool, and the user cannot link to their application. Companies that transition to cloud computing must consider new network design and connectivity, as well as quality of service (QoS) management, enabling them to consolidate the private cloud and public cloud resources to ensure optimal application performance.

Cloud computing must combine the inherent perceptions of its applications with the flexible vision of where and how these applications work, and the Cloud network is designed to support this. There are two main options for consolidating cloud pools, one for creating "virtual data centers", which are implemented by linking the public cloud resources behind the Enterprise data Center and controller, which can be a software element or load Balancing switch, which provides users with application access. Another approach is to create VPNs to connect applications and users, regardless of where applications and user hosting are located. Both of these options have their own advantages and limitations.

When managers control cloud resources, all application access is managed through this "manager". However, this can be a problem when the actual resources are widely dispersed, because some users may have network connections that are directly connected to the resource, which is better than through a controller connection, and additional hops can cause latency and performance problems. When cloud resources are collected in a small area (such as the Metro network), the virtual data center mode is the best model.

The advantage of the VPN approach is that the user (and the user) can access each cloud host in a uniform way, but there are also problems with this approach. First, the efficient use of all VPN and channel technologies in a private network requires a cloud-hosted router in a hybrid cloud application. BGP termination, MPLS label edge Routers (LER) features, and other virtual network technologies are often not available on routers, and cloud vendors cannot support the router hardware installed by the user. In addition, there are potential sequential failover and overflow issues, because load balancing is not a normal property of the VPN. The good news is that there are emerging solutions that can help optimize the efficiency of VPN in a cloud environment.

Using SDN to connect Cloud resources

A new approach to connecting cloud resources is to use software definition networks (SDN), especially the OpenFlow protocol, to establish links between static application addresses and resources that are actually managed by applications. Most major switches/routers support this feature, so this policy can be compatible with existing data centers and WAN network devices used by most enterprises. Some SDN vendors may also provide applications and tools to facilitate this network virtualization. Generic network virtualization tools can help organizations apply mapping dynamically allocated resources if they are in a cloud environment.

Ensure quality of experience, regardless of the location of users and cloud resources

A common problem with network cloud resources (public and private) is to ensure that the experience quality of the application (QoE) is not significantly different from resource allocation. A real cloud "resource pool" should be able to serve any user mix and have a comparable qoe, which means that all paths to resources, and all users to resources, have a network connection with good QoS.

VPNs can be used to connect all cloud components, including users, but when the cloud data center is on a LAN, it is best to use VPLS or other virtual LAN services to connect the data center to the virtual data center. This is especially true when internal processes or storage traffic are expected to be more innovative.

Not all cloud vendors can add their cloud services to VPNs, and not all cloud vendors support VPNs. Since each private cloud should be considered the beginning of a mixed cloud relationship, it is best for organizations to carefully examine the available public clouds in the dominant position before signing a contract to ensure that they are compatible with the VPN candidate scheme.
