The Digital Universe published by IDC shows that over the next eight years we generate more than 40 ZB bytes of data, which means that over the next eight years, Personal will generate 5200GB of data.

40ZB is equivalent to 40 trillion GB, this is a very large number. It is estimated that from now until 2020, all data will double every two years.

Much of the data from now until 2020 will be machine-generated, with machine sensors and smart devices communicating with other devices.

IDC estimates that by 2020, 33% of the data will contain valuable information.

Digital universe research report

The digital universe includes images and videos, digital cinema, and includes traditional corporate data such as banking data, safety record data for airports and major events, and subatomic collision records for the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN.

Using business intelligence to analyze data reveals the patterns of use of social media, the relevance of scientific data, and more. IDC said in the study: "It uses 'big data' or MapReduce technology to extract value from a large amount of untapped data."

The Digital Universe study, sponsored by EMC, was first released in 2005 and was updated annually in the previous three years. However, this latest update lasts 18 months from the previous version. The last version was released in June 2011, when it was predicted that by 2020 the amount of data generated will reach 35ZB instead of 40ZB.

According to Chuck Hollis, CTO of EMC's Global Marketing, the latest IDC research shows that the number of physical or virtual servers in a business will increase tenfold by 2020.

"From another perspective, the number of TB data you now have is expected to increase by 14 times by 2020," he said. "I believe people in the IT industry are already aware of this."

The study shows that the number of servers worldwide will increase 10-fold, while the amount of information directly managed by the enterprise data center will increase 14 times, while the number of IT professionals is expected to increase 1.5 times.

In order to manage such data growth, Hollis said, companies need to restructure to create automated service-oriented architectures (SOA) that allow businesses to automatically configure and pay for server, network, and storage capacity from online catalogs.

Need more efficiency

The study of the digital universe is consistent with Hollis's point of view. IT managers must find ways to increase the efficiency of their infrastructure so that IT administrators can focus on more valuable activities such as BYOD policies, big data analytics, customer networking rates and security. The study shows that one of the ways is to consolidate storage, servers and the network through a converged infrastructure.

In terms of cloud storage, the Digital Universe study presents a different view than "most of the data will be stored in the cloud."

While public and private cloud computing currently cost less than 5% of overall IT spending, IDC estimates that nearly 40% of the information will "reach" cloud computing (such as the transport) by 2020, while only about 15% The data will be saved in the cloud environment.

Between 2012 and 2020, the investment in managing, researching and storing data will only increase by 40%. As a result, the investment per GB will drop from $ 2 to 20 cents.

Entertainment and social media

Much of the data in the digital universe is entertainment or social media data. In 2012, 68% of the data involved users watching digital television, using social media, or sending mobile photos and videos. However, businesses are responsible for 80% of the information in the digital universe.

As a result, organizations must address copyright, privacy and compliance issues, even though those data are primarily used by users.

IDC's research estimates that about one-third of all data requires some form of protection, the need for privacy protection, compliance with regulations, or the prevention of digital snooping or theft. However, at present only about 20% of the data have these protection. This level of security varies by region and with less protection in emerging high-tech markets such as Brazil, Russia, factors, Malaysia and Arab.

IDC said that emerging market countries will gradually evolve from generating a small number of data to generating most of the data. For example, in 2005, 48% of all figures in the digital universe came from the United States and Western Europe, with less than 20% in emerging markets. However, the share of data in emerging markets now stands at 36% and by 2020 it will reach 62%. By that time, China alone will produce 21% of the data.

In addition, the study also found:

The network is becoming more and more important. The incubation period must be shorter and shorter, not longer. The data must be analyzed, deployed, secured and verified, all in real time. In the next eight years, network infrastructure will be a key investment.

Legislation to monitor information security must be harmonized and agreed on a global basis, although differences will still exist.
