Oracle will acquire private cloud infrastructure management software provider Nimbula, the aim of which is to supplement Oracle's software stack to build a hybrid cloud, Beijing time March 14. The deal will provide Oracle with OpenStack and http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/14358.html "> Amazon Web Services technical expertise."

Nimbula is located in Mountain View, Calif., and was created by Chris Pinkham, who manages the Amazon Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2) and many other EC2 teams. The company also owns the technical expertise of the OpenStack cloud software stack.

Nimbula's flagship software, "Nimbula Director", is designed to deploy and manage workloads in both private and public clouds. This software can be used to manage cloud work, just as distributed software development, IaaS (infrastructure as a service) and SaaS (software as a service), host services, batch processing, and Hadoop (Distributed system) deployments. Nimbula recently provided access to the OpenStack API (Application programming Interface) for "Nimbula Director", allowing customers to manage this Open-source cloud platform through Nimbula.

Oracle said in a brief statement announcing the pending deal that Nimbula's products were a complement to Oracle's own products.

So far, Oracle's most effort around cloud computing has been to provide hardware and software to run private clouds. The approach is to provide engineering systems like exalogic and customer-oriented databases, applications, and middleware software to run in a cloud configuration.

Oracle also has a publicly hosted cloud service. The service provides many Oracle applications, databases and intermediate software services.

Oracle is not the only company pursuing hybrid cloud management software. Red Hat has recently acquired a company that offers similar technology, MANAGEIQ.

Oracle's deal is expected to be completed in the first half of 2013. But the terms of the deal are not disclosed. (Compiled/Populus euphratica)
