Gartner:it Department should plan to migrate to private cloud

If fast IT services are important, organizations should shift from traditional computing to virtualization to create a private cloud. Whether operated by your IT department or by a private cloud service provider, the private cloud will provide an advantage for the enterprise.

This is the message from Gartner analyst this week. Gartner analysts point to hundreds of IT managers at Gartner's IT infrastructure operations and Management Summit in Orlando to identify some paths to private clouds. The transition from a traditional physical server network to a virtualized private cloud should be done with capacity management and staffing strategic planning.

Gartner analyst Thomas Bittman says the IT department is more than just a device owner and manages equipment. Your job is to provide a level of service based on cost flexibility. Virtualization, he notes, is not the way to achieve this goal in order to run a private cloud. IT services can be quickly provided to people in the organization who need these services in a private cloud, often based on refunds.

Gartner analysts stress that building a private cloud is more than just adding virtual machines to a physical server. Businesses have increased virtual machines at a rapid pace. Gartner predicts that approximately 45% of the x86 servers now have a virtual machine based workload. That figure will grow to 58% next year, to 77% in 2015. VMware is an obvious market leader. But Microsoft, with Hyper-V, is also growing. Jie and other companies with XenServer are also competitors.

Gartner analyst Chris Wolf adds that the transition to a more cloud-like data center is good for businesses. However, this will also allow you to make some difficult architectural decisions. He advises Gartner's customers to centralize IT operations, purchase Intel and AMD servers optimized for virtualized environments, and have security, application, identity, and information management in the cloud strategy.

While cloud computing, device manufacturers and service providers insist that this is not a real private cloud, unless it is fully automated, Wolf says the reality is that some processes are artificial. However, the preferred implementation does not allow IT administrators to manage the specific security features associated with virtual machines.

No matter which virtual machine platform is used, there are some mix and match problems in the current enterprise, which can lead to specific management challenges, Gartner analysts said. There are many sophisticated management tools available for virtualization systems.

Wolf said there was an interruption today. He noted that Gartner recently held a forum for more than 10 CIOs responsible for the construction of private clouds for the agency. 75% of participants said they were using the tools developed by the company to manage connections to asset management systems.

However, Gartner is urging the enterprise system to be a long-term private cloud strategy that adapts to rapid changes in the manufacturers and providers that will provide new products and services. There is no doubt that in this process, many manufacturers will withdraw from the market.

The private cloud plan will include newer purchases and changes to the current internal management process and figuring out which applications are best for virtualization, Wolf said. Starting with files, printing, and applications that are not important tasks is a good way to start doing this. Some applications cannot be virtualized because these applications have special hardware requirements.

For example, Paul Rizzo, the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline responsible for infrastructure business partners and end-user infrastructure services, said the company found Microsoft's SharePoint software running poorly on VMware platforms.

Gartner cautions that in the long run, companies need to ensure that the future recommendations to software vendors require applications to support virtualization. Wolf also pointed out at a seminar that virtualization mobility and the import of a virtual machine from one hypervisor to another are quite complex.

Wolf points out that multiple management programs in the datacenter require different configuration management tools. Sometimes, companies deploy different vendor management programs in different locations or business units. This is the cause of identification and it is difficult to change control. However, he points out that VMware's expensive license costs and restrictions on each virtual machine used in the cloud mean that IT administrators will always consider switching to other vendors.

Gartner acknowledges that in virtualized environments, more than 25 times times the bandwidth comes from the same physical location. Server I/O needs to be increased from 1GB per second to 10GB. One of the main drivers of all this is clearly VMware. Fabbi points out that VMware features such as vmotion require virtualization. In a virtualized environment, things are changing. All of these knock-on effects are that the switch on the rack requires the use of InfiniBand technology to increase throughput from 10G to 40G. This may save consolidated I/O, but the challenge is in the rack.

Fabbi says virtualization will drive the transition from a traditional three-tier architecture to a two-tier architecture. All future networks will focus more on the two tier than the three level. In addition to the decision to launch its own products, the alliance with HP, VCE Cisco and VMware, and the newer, architecture-based architecture introduced by IBM should be evaluated.
