How big is the Microsoft Azure cloud?

A Microsoft official wrote in an official blog that, in the azure cloud, an average of 270,000 requests are processed per second, with a maximum processing peak of 880,000 requests per second within a few months of the year. The number of requests processed per second has increased almost 3 times times over the past year.

You can compare Amazon Web Services (AWS), and at the beginning of this year, AWS's Simple Storage Service (S3) was storing 905 billion objects, adding about 1 billion objects per day, averaging 650,000 requests per second.

It's a little difficult to compare the size of each company's cloud to the other. AWS's S3 is just one of the storage options available to users, and other options include resilient block storage (EBS) and database services such as fully manageable NoSQL database Dynamodb.

What Microsoft calls 4 trillion objects is independent content for each individual user, not a duplicate backup. These objects include disks, drives, tables, queues, and "BLOBs", a Microsoft-created term used to describe a batch of files connected to a single user account. A blob can contain up to hundreds of blocks, each of which can be up to 200GB in size, and each user account can store up to 100TB blobs. Microsoft says these blobs can be used to store large amounts of unstructured data, such as Web browser data such as video and images, and can store files for distributed access or disaster recovery. This June, Microsoft reduced the cost of accessing Azure storage tiers 10 times times.

At the same time, the disk and drive mentioned above is Microsoft's new IaaS product, launched this spring. The primary service provided by Azure is PAAs, a service for developers to create custom applications and store them in the cloud. Azure also enters the IaaS market by providing virtual computing examples in both Windows and Linux operating systems, competing with AWS's Resilient Computing Cloud (EC2).
