According to a new report released by the Pew Research Center in Wednesday, the vast majority of users in developing countries such as Brazil, Russia and India are logging on to social networking sites, compared with developed countries such as Germany and Japan.

Although the number of Internet users in developing countries is less than in developed countries, they are more likely to join social networks once they have access to the Internet, the report said.

Pew's survey of 21 countries has assessed the status of social media development in all countries of the world. In Mexico, Brazil, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Russia, India and other developing countries, most Internet users use social networking sites, the report said.

"Once people in these countries have access to the Internet, they tend to join social networks quickly," the report says. "This is the Pew's conclusion after comparing the more economically developed countries such as Japan and Germany. In these developed countries, only half of the Internet users are social networking sites.

The growing popularity of social networking sites in developing countries is also in line with the development strategies of companies such as Facebook, which are aggressively opening up markets that still have growth potential.

The Pew report shows that the popularity of mobile phones has boosted the popularity of social networking sites in developing countries. The median percentage of the world's people with mobile phones is 87%, while 26% are using their mobile phones to surf the internet. Of the 12 countries surveyed by Pew, at least 60% of smartphone users log on to social networking sites via mobile phones.

Here's what the Pew latest report highlights:

1. The hottest topics in social media are music and movies, but users will also post posts related to community, sports and politics.

2. In Arab countries, people prefer to discuss community and political issues on social networking sites. In Egypt and Tunisia, which played a major role in the Arab spring movement, more than six-tenths of social networking users share their political views, above the median of 34% per cent in other countries.

3. Of the 19 countries surveyed in the Pew survey, about three-tenths and older adults use Facebook, with about half of the adults in the UK, the United States, Russia, Spain and the Czech Republic as Facebook users. In the remaining two countries-India and Pakistan-the proportion of adults using social media is relatively low, with only 6% and 4% respectively.

4, in addition to India, Egypt and China, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America and other regions of the smartphone users are less likely to collect information via mobile phones. In India, 60% of smartphone users use mobile phones to find employment information. 56% of Egyptians and 48% of Chinese are more likely to find news on their mobile phones.
