Many well-known companies around the world are deploying and using OpenStack. Recently, they have explained the reasons for choosing OpenStack at the OpenStack Summit.
In an online demo of a theme, Senior VP Mark Muehl of the American Kang Custer Telecom company shows how his company uses OpenStack. Muehl took out a TV set-top box to showcase the company's new platform X1--TV viewing guidance system. The back end of the system is supported by the OpenStack cloud.
Muehl said they had conducted a survey of OpenStack in a year.
Muehl explains that developing software in a company's wired environment is time-consuming and difficult. And all the information on the wired network is located in the consumer's home set-top box, the company can not stand in the development perspective to do something.
"We want to change the situation," Muehl said. ”
The company has developed a platform called X1. Instead of having all the information built into the set-top box, it's in the cloud.
"With this platform, all round-trip traffic sent from the set-top box to our network is passed and run on the OpenStack production cloud." ”
Best Buy
Best Buy, a consumer electronics retailer, uses OpenStack to provide a continuous delivery cloud for bestbuy.com.
"In the past year, Best Buy has been exploring the rebuilding of our E-commerce platform," says Joel Crabb, BestBuy.com's chief architect. "Part of our job is to migrate browsing and search capabilities into the cloud." ”
During the Thanksgiving period in 2012, Crabb noted that only 25% of bestbuy.com traffic was not brought by cloud services. He added that best buys the old product browse and search page takes 7-30 seconds to load. With the cloud schema, the current page load takes about 2.5 seconds.
Steve Eastham, director of Best Buy Web architecture, explains that the company is now dedicated to using OpenStack to build the continuous delivery cloud CDC component of the next generation architecture. Eastham described the CDC as an incubator of innovation.
"All of our teams that develop new NoSQL or cache platforms are now developing self-service," Eastham says. "The team can enter and release its own environment." ”
PayPal
PayPal Architecture manager Saran Mandair says his company uses OpenStack in the same way as the best Buy development team. PayPal's OpenStack Cloud is designed to give developers more time to do more.
Mandair notes that before moving to OpenStack, developers need to design documents and different tools when they want to deploy something.
"What we need for the entire architecture is an operating system," Mandair says. "Developers need computing, storage, and architecture deployment services, and they don't care about internal complexity at all." ”
